Text Format: read @ the pit of voles

Comments: I poured my heart into this one, folks. I actually recommend the audio version first, because I’m terribly curious to hear someone’s reaction to listening to a fanfic they haven’t previously ‘read’ before. There's sound effects, even! But whichever you elect, I hope you enjoy it.

Thanks to Wikipedia for clear definitions of both the title and origin theory. Also, this would have turned out wildly different if I hadn't had the Donnie Darko soundtrack in the background, so thanks also to composer Michael Andrews.

Comments: This one is up on youtube for easy consumption! This is the first time I'm putting out a podfic that I've recorded and wrote. Not surprisingly, it's easier to record your own stuff! I think it's because I know exactly how a sentence should sound in my head, and I'm not trying to guess like I am with fic by other authors. I'm particularly pleased with this ficlet anyway; I'd say its my favorite one-shot I've done for S/P.

Comments: Here's my first try at a longer fic...this is about 4300 words, and clocks at nearly half an hour. The length of a full episode! I separated them into five tracks for your listening ease. This was a big project for me to edit; it took me several hours. But I'm pleased with the result. I can't quite believe it's done! Comments are always appreciated.

Last Friday [livejournal.com profile] sheldon_penny had a special event for Fiction Friday, where they challenged the comm members to write 50 drabbles in 24 hours. We did it, it was a blast, and many people put out two or three offerings. I did some on page 1 and page 2, personally. The challenge themes were homecoming and future.

Out of that event, I decided to record one of [livejournal.com profile] irrel's very few fanfics onto audio podfic format, after she encouraged me insanely to try recording my own. After I gave it a try, I realized how fun it was, and now I'm kind of addicted. I've made several podfics over the weekend and today, mostly of other people but a couple of my own as well. I've gotten better at reading (you'll notice the differences in the links below), and just tonight I figured out how to remove hiss and have a clean background for the audio files! ...This actually makes me very excited, which shows how geeky I am. Anyway, it's kinda tiring for my voice. I have new respect for voice actors and narrators! ...I'm drinking a lot of tea and sucking on cough drops.

So far I've limited myself to BBT fanfic and have been practicing the voices for those characters. (The ones I'll post tomorrow are probably the best example of impressions.) But after I'm comfortable with these I'll probably experiment with other fandoms!

I've seen some discussion of Emmy nominations on my flist, and I haven't mentioned it, but I do feel I wanted to say something in regards to The Big Bang Theory.

I think Jim Parsons is a hilarious actor and if he gets tapped for best actor in a comedy, that it will be a worthwhile nomination and if he gets it, a solid win.

However. And this is a big HOWEVER.

As much as I love the fandom, and as entertaining as Sheldon is, I do not think The Big Bang Theory is the best comedy on tv. I'm conflicted as to whether I think it should even be nominated. But if it were to get nominated and win over How I Met Your Mother, I will scream my rage across the internet. How I Met Your Mother has had probably the most hilarious season of its run so far, on top of having brilliantly developed characters, continuity so constant and clever it makes me deliriously happy, and genuinely moving storylines. It is six or seven times the show that TBBT is.

Will I be upset if HIMYM loses to Two and a Half Men? A little disgruntled, but I've never watched 2.5Men so I can't judge. But I have seen the entire second season of TBBT, and it doesn't even hold a burning twig, much less a candle, to HIMYM's season. I love writing Sheldon/Penny fanfic and reading it, but in many ways, the TBBT fandom is what I want the show to be. What I imagine the characters could be if they were written better, developed more, given more heart and more wit and if the actors were simply handed better fucking material. On the other hand, I've barely written anything for HIMYM because, honestly, it already is everything I would wish it to be.

In case you think I've suddenly had a brain tumor and foresaken all my other fandoms, take a gander and balk alongside me at this bit of movie remake news.

I don't know what the goal is of such an undertaking, because it seems nothing but a step backward to me. I'm not against the idea of a film remake, but that'd be, like, ten years from now. Fifteen even. Craps, some of the actors of the tv show are still in their 20s! I'd much rather see a new original story set in the same universe: a different Slayer with a new tale to tell.

ETA: Actually, that's exactly what they should do! A new Slayer, a new movie. And then after three new Slayers, we can have a Vampire Slayer team superhero movie! And Buffy, who has arthritis at 36, can preside over them and conquer the first four levels of the Hell dimension and, on the side, acquire her firefighter's certification.

ETA2: I'm kind of surprised that "sleeping on a bed of bones" [Restless, "I don't sleep on a bed of bones."] hasn't been made into an episode of Bones yet!

Just imagine it: they find a mattress stuffed with human bones! Tucked into the springs, waiting like a revolting parody of The Princess & The Pea. It seems like exactly the kind of job for Booth and Brennan.

My brain sees this and says:

Oh no! Nine kidnapped Scully and took her to the past, and now she's wearing dowdy period costumes while he's looking all strange with the long hair and they're arguing, because she wants to go back home to make steamy fun times with glasses-wearing Mulder but the Doctor's all "No, we need to stop an alien invasion!" and Scully's all "Been there, did that for nine seasons, so over it! Now take me back to my broody woobie; I don't need two! And if you don't, I'll shoot you. FOUR MORE TIMES until it works."

...My head's an odd place.

I think the humor in HIMYM episodes are really come-and-go for some people. I get that. But the last, I don't know, 8 episodes have been solid make-me-laugh-and-giggle-ridiculously episodes. This one added to that. There's something very free about this season in terms of embracing the silliness and the love, and that formula has translated to mucho grande laughs from me.

So, yeah, I loved this episode too. In fact, in terms of # of laughs per ep, this was one of the highest of the season for me. )

3. I'm happy to say that the WTF?!Surprise value has at last eclipsed the WTF?!Ick value for me.

There was a LOT going on this episode. )

That's all for now. Many revelations. I don't see how anyone's supposed to be able to write fanfic for this series, though. How can you characterize people when you have no idea who is who or why or how?
timepiececlock: (Origin of Love)
For this meme, pick a fictional character and any fandom (excluding the fandom the first fictional character hails from) and I will tell you who is that fictional character's favorite character from that fandom.

For example, if I was given the Tenth Doctor (Doctor Who) and Heroes, I would go:

"The Tenth Doctor's favorites would probably be Ando and Claire. Ando because he tries hard, makes up for his mistakes, never gives up, and is loyal to the end. Because he's a bit like Donna, with his attitude and clear thinking. The Doctor would have a soft spot for Claire, though, because she's brave and true (and blond.) He would totally ship Nikki/D.L./Micah as an OT3 family."

I'm good for anime/manga, tv, book, and movie fandoms, though not for comics. gakked from [livejournal.com profile] redbrunja

Annie: "I'm a ghost, actually."
Vampire: "Get out! Can you like, move things about, and walk from one room to another?"
George: "Yeah, I'm pretty sure everyone can do that."

I really wish the vampire leader on this show was Nikola Tesla from Sanctuary instead of the actual character they have here. Tesla, btw, is also about the closest thing I can imagine to what HIMYM's Barney Stinson would be like as a vampire. You know, plus about 80 years of life experience and a healthy loss of morality. And Magnus is totally his Robin. Tesla would have made this entire vampire clan about six times more fun.

Mitchell: *whine whine whine*
Tesla: You're so right! *EATS HIM* ...Ew, bit of heartburn.

ETA: Someone tell me I'm not the only viewer who thinks Owen looks like a live-action Aladdin.

timepiececlock: (Origin of Love)
This is the third episode in a row that is consistently entertaining, interesting, and provocative. While not as good as episode 7, it's better than episode 6, and leaps and bounds better than episodes 1-5. Now that we seem to be off the Misson Of The Week pattern (for the moment) we're seeing more freedom in storytelling in terms of what the basic concept can be stretched to include. This episode also did the most important thing, the thing this show has failed to do right up until tonight: it gave characterization to the actives, and thus made us care about them.

Now that we (the audience) have glimpsed these insights, I think it will be easier to feel connected to the characters in future episodes. The irony is that now I'm more interested in Sierra, Victor, and November than I ever have been in Echo (although I think Eliza Dushku did her best tonight that she has so far.)

Spoiler comments within. Long comments on plot, heroism, and briefly on ships. )

Over all, I'm looking forward to next week! And I'm finally starting to picture this as a long-term project, as something I could watch and enjoy in future seasons.

In an effort to convert [livejournal.com profile] irrel to all my favorite shows, she and I have embarked on a massive and intense Farscape viewing project. For her it's the first time, for me it's a rewatch. I originally saw all of FS when it aired--I think I even recorded the miniseries on a VHS tape, as we didn't have DVR at that house. While I've seen a few odd episodes here and there (I've seen "Crackers Don't Matter" about four times), most of the show I've only seen once, and sometimes out of order. I remember season 4 very clearly, but seasons 1-3 are more muddled in my recollection. Nevertheless, it remains probably my favorite tv show after Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Fullmetal Alchemist. It has one of my dearest and truest OTPs of all television history, and it broke my heart a thousand times over only to patch it up again with clay hands, booming laughter, and tentative smiles.

When I've pitched Farscape to people before, I've warned them that the first season isn't the strongest. However, having finished season 1 tonight, for the first time in complete sequential order and in a relatively short viewing period of a month, I have to eat those words. Yeah, the first half of season 1 is weak. But the second half starts to kick major, major ass. And the season as a whole is better than its disparate parts. It's full of little gems like "The Flax" and "A Human Reaction", as well as the epic, emotional rollercoaster of the final four episodes that I watched today. Man are they great! I'm noticing tiny details of characterization that either skipped my mind entirely on tv, or faded in memory. And the acting--oh, the acting. John Crichton and Aeryn Sun are stunning, together and apart. D'Argo is unrecognizable as a human actor under all that make up, but his emotions seep through. Especially in the second half of the season, once he's made his peace with Crichton and Aeryn as companions. Zhaan has almost as difficult a role of being a mystic archetype while still being multilayered character: she's not quite as subtle as D'Argo, but she's getting close. Rygel and Pilot are wonderfully orchestrated with talented voice actors giving them expression.

With season 1 of Farscape, I rediscovered the little things... Read more... )

I can't babble about my show anymore because I have to go to bed, but I'm planning a massive season 2 marathon with [livejournal.com profile] irrel this weekend, so I wanted to write down all these squishy, squealy fangirl feelings before the new season started. My love is back on, baby. I never did fandom for this show, never felt the need to because every crazy thing I could possibly imagine the show eventually did. But after I finish this rewatching journey, I might just dive into some rec lists. Because this is good eatin' my friends.

When new Doctor Who first aired, I thought it reminded me a bit of Farscape, if FS lost all its sex and its violence, if it cut out the intense moral issues and the gray-area decisions the characters make (the entire galaxy for a single person, the Doctor would never do that), if the black leather and the excessive use of explosions were traded for cleaner, clearer moral choices with deus ex machina devises that made the culpability dwindle to negligable. I love new Who like a beloved thing, but it was only ever the romance that made me actually cry. Farscape is so ambitious...it has its flaws like any show, but it just reached higher and that paid off. I will always compare DW to Farscape, not the other way around. And it wouldn't be a stretch to compare Battlestar Galactica to it too, because BSG was not the first misery-laden, wonderfully acted, heartbreaking I-can't-believe-how-angsty-and-how-great-this-show-is epic subtle insane adventure space opera I ever saw. It was #2.

Having just watched last night's brutal (and probably Emmy-winning) Daily Show interview with Jim Cramer, I have to say that I'm really freaking proud--even though it's a tiny thing that means nothing IRL--I'm really freaking proud that I voted for Jon Stewart in the Fandom Cage Match March Madness 2009 all the way until I couldn't anymore.

Hey, fandom. THAT'S MY GUY.

Jon Stewart & Daily Show writers: you rock my world, 4 nights a week, every week. Much love, Rashaka.

Okay, LJ peeps!

I just finished the final 3 episodes of Merlin, which were great fun and somehow not quite as cheesy as the rest of the show. There was cheese, of course, but it was tasty cheese. Gouda, probably, or blue. And now I need recs. >D

Fanvids are good, fanfics are better! I'm partial to Morgana and Merlin as characters, but for shipping I'm a traditionalist (Arthur/Gwen, thank you show) and kinda weird (Merlin/Morgana, Arthur/Morgana, Merlin/Nimwueh.) I did like Merlin/Gwen earlier, but my traditional het shipper gooey insides rebelled in favor of Arthur/Gwen.

Still, I'd appreciate recs of any pairings, if you love them! And I do love Merlin+Arthur Buddy Adventure Stories. And group adventure stories. I totally get Merlin/Arthur, even though it's not my cuppa beyond BFFs.

NOTE: my thoughts of the overall season in comments below
