HP ficathon? Epilogue rewrite

Who'd be up for a "Write Your Own Epilogue" ficathon for Harry Potter & The Deathly Hollows?

When you read the last pages of Harry Potter book 7...

Maybe you thought the epilogue got all the relationships write, but all the jobs wrong?
Maybe you thought the epilogue was written by an overly-eager eleven year old?
Maybe you thought the kids were cool, but the ships weren't what you were hoping for?
Maybe you thought the people who lived would have died, and the ones who died would have lived?
Maybe some people named their kids something else, and others didn't have kids at all?
Maybe everyone didn't marry their high school sweetheart?
Maybe nineteen years later in Harry's life, thinks aren't quite so conventional?

Maybe every discruntled fan on the internet ought to write their own epilogue. Different ships, different careers, different names for peoples kids?

Where would such a ficathon be advertised?
What communities?
Is something like this already in existence?
Would YOU do it, if it was challenged?

*meekly raises her hand*

except I'd probably end up writing 20 different versions. One with book canon, just different writing, one for the D/G ship, one for the N/L ship, one for the H/L ship, one to keep Remus and Tonks alive, one with more kids, one with less kids...*erects a barrier against the plot bunnies until such a time as a ficathon might occur*

(I don't belong to any HP communities, so I'm afraid I can't help you there.)

*continues to blind self to all spoilers*

I say go for it! I highly doubt a ficathon idea like this has already been proposed, since it's pretty unconventional and I don't recall ever seeing anything like this for another fandom. Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with any HP-related communities (the fandom is just way too rabid) but if you also try advertising at some HP-fanfic sites you might attract some LJ users.

I'd like to join too but first I need to get my hands on the book and READ. In any case, there will definitely be fans unconsciously writing their own epilogues anyway, so you should advertise as early as possible.

I'd do it! I know [livejournal.com profile] omnicular has a post-DH challenge, but they're going strictly canon.
And I'd advertise in fic comms, eg. [livejournal.com profile] genfic_hogwarts, [livejournal.com profile] hp_slash, etc.

I'd do it for fun!

Sign me bloody up.

This is interesting!

Mind if I spead the word to our H/L community?

I haven't actually posted anything yet. I like the idea, but I don't think I could manage a ficathon right now. Usually it involves postings about rules, potential timelines (one to two months is average, I think), and then "selling" it to other communities and groups. Maybe even setting up a community.

Oh! Oh. We could do that. Make a community, and then you don't really need your own timeline. And non-LJers could post in comments, or ask the mods to post it in their name.

If you helped me, I'd do it. I could start it, and write the challenge post, but you'd have to help with the rules, and probably with the site design. I'm terrible with LJ layouts. If you can't, do you possibly know someone who can?

Giving the challenge its own comm is good... it gives it longevity and legitimacy, and opens it up to the rest of LJ, beyond just people who are really into HP.

What do you think?

If it were a community (named, possibly, "rocksfall_hp", as in "Rocks fall. Everyone dies." because I like that name bunches), would you like to be a mod?

Sounds good. The whole point of a "write your own epilogue" would be, of course, to go against canon, or to write canon with better sentences, so I don't think the challenges would be competing.

I'm condisering doing it. If I do, I'll let you know, and ask you to advertise for me in those comms.

Ooh, sure! Hee, this is gonna be fun.

LoL, I like your suggestions for the name :)

As for organizing, I'm hopeless, especially on LJ -- I can barely make posts without messing things up. I don't know why I can manage well enough on FAP but be so inept here. So for site design, I'm the worst possible choice.

As to rules, they wouldn't have to be very extensive, would they? I wouldn't want to start imposing deadlines on people (we have quite enough of those in RL, after all)...

If you like, I can mention it at the L&L community and see if anyone would like to have a go at helping you organize it?

I wouldn't think there would be many, just basic stuff like no spamming, rate your stories appropriately, etc.

Fadingembers just agreed to help me set it up. So when we have it set, I'll beg your help for advertising, yeah?

I'm gonna make it. Right now. :) Though it would need a bit of thought before officially "launching".

You copy-and-paster, you. I'll post on my journal and encourage others to spread the word as well. And, you know, maybe get to work on an epilogue or two of my own.

(The comm name made me LOL. I salute you!)

Paste wha? I don't have any paste, or glue either. You're imagining things.

(Thanks! I figured it would be easy to remember, but I hope not too obscure.)

Heeey, a quick question: can we write a pseudo-epilogue with parts? Not large parts, mind, but can we? What I'm considering can also be posted in one go, though, so it's up to you.

I don't see why not. Though it makes sense to post in one go. :) Are thinking about something with different parts for each character?

Re: HP epilogue

[identity profile] rasielle.livejournal.com 2007-09-16 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmm, something like that, but there isn't exactly a pattern to it. Most of the parts are for Harry, but a few are for Hogwarts, Neville, and so on.
