Particularly in the scenes where the author expands on the film's dialogues in ways that totally ruin the dramatic effect of the scene.
That's the most distracting part, aside from the overuse of adverbs. And alliteration. I've tried writing fanfic to interpret a scene on screen, and it's actually kind of fun to get wrapped up in expanding it. But it's a problem when the expanded dialogue ruins the drama. For me, that's what happens in the scene with the Kelvin battling the ship at the beginning.
Other details are somewhat amusing, though. For instance, apparently Spock was throwing up in the bathroom out of anxiety in the scene before he talks to his mother about college. I just LOLed at the idea of Spock, even a 20 year old Spock, barfing from nerves.
...I'm not sure it was supposed to be funny, though.
Quinto is the best thing about this book. And the added background.
