Checkov strikes me as the sort of guy who'd have one of those big families you kinda hate but actually love strongly. I like how you give us that feeling of background to him without being too explicit about it.

Yeah, me too. I don't know what original canon has to say about his family, so I tried to imply without concrete statements.

I seem to recall TOS revealing very little about ANY of the crew's backstories, save Spock and possibly Kirk, but it's been a while since I've seen it so perhaps there were little hints and lines here and there I missed.
