timepiececlock: (Barney&Robin - Maybe I Even Love You)

A little confession I have regarding CBS shows and Emmy wishes.

I've seen some discussion of Emmy nominations on my flist, and I haven't mentioned it, but I do feel I wanted to say something in regards to The Big Bang Theory.

I think Jim Parsons is a hilarious actor and if he gets tapped for best actor in a comedy, that it will be a worthwhile nomination and if he gets it, a solid win.

However. And this is a big HOWEVER.

As much as I love the fandom, and as entertaining as Sheldon is, I do not think The Big Bang Theory is the best comedy on tv. I'm conflicted as to whether I think it should even be nominated. But if it were to get nominated and win over How I Met Your Mother, I will scream my rage across the internet. How I Met Your Mother has had probably the most hilarious season of its run so far, on top of having brilliantly developed characters, continuity so constant and clever it makes me deliriously happy, and genuinely moving storylines. It is six or seven times the show that TBBT is.

Will I be upset if HIMYM loses to Two and a Half Men? A little disgruntled, but I've never watched 2.5Men so I can't judge. But I have seen the entire second season of TBBT, and it doesn't even hold a burning twig, much less a candle, to HIMYM's season. I love writing Sheldon/Penny fanfic and reading it, but in many ways, the TBBT fandom is what I want the show to be. What I imagine the characters could be if they were written better, developed more, given more heart and more wit and if the actors were simply handed better fucking material. On the other hand, I've barely written anything for HIMYM because, honestly, it already is everything I would wish it to be.

I agree with this post in its entirety! And I'd like to add, as a person who has seen several episodes of this season of Two and a Half Men (and let me stress this was against my will), Two and a Half Men is complete and utter shit. The Big Bang Theory isn't half the show How I Met Your Mother is, and Two and a Half Men isn't half the show The Big Bang Theory is. So!

(Two and a Half Men's persisting success both horrifies and infuriates me, ha ha. IT IS SO HORRIBLE ON SO MANY LEVELS.)

I have yet to watch TBBT, but I thought I'd throw in a chorus of "yay HIMYM" anyway. It really is one of the most cleverly written and funny shows I've ever watched - AND it has strong character development. It's kind of amazing.

I've seen bits and pieces of HIMYM.

I've seen many episodes of 2.5M (awesome acronym, btw).

I can tell you without hesitation HIMYM is far superior. X3

I agree that HIMYM should win for best comedy (I mean... c'mon! Nothing even compares) and since I'm sure Jim Parsons and NPH will get nominated in different categories I won't have to choose between them, yay!

I've never watched HIMYM, but I hear you. The shows I want to write (and read) fanfic for (like TBBT) are inevitably the shows that don't quite live up to my hopes and expectations in some way -- so that I feel the need to set the record straight or see it set straight by others. If a show is really well written and characterized and is progressing in a direction that satisfies me, I feel no need to fic it or read fic about it.

Let's hear it for glorious dissatisfaction! But let's not give Emmys to shows that don't deserve it, either.

(Er, sorry for the drive-by comment if you're not into that kind of thing. It's just that after re-reading all there is of "The Earth Moved [numbermumble] Miles In Our Kitchen" last night, I'm stalking your journal in case you wrote any more S/P fanfic I don't know about. :)
