I think he deserved it. Whatever he's done in his personal life (and fleeing the country instead of just doing the jail time? Stupid and cowardly. I'm glad they didn't let him back just for the Oscars.) his direction of The Pianist was wonderful, and in my opinion, greatly deserving of recognition. I was pleasently surprised when he won because I was sure it was going to go to Marshall and I'm not a huge Chicago fan.
