Third thought on my second viewing of Pirates
It's taken me this long, but on watching this film again, I finally realized who Jack's clandestine, surreptitious, and opportunistic way of thinking reminded me of:
Methos.
Yep. In fact, exactly so. Jack is like a 16th-century!Methos, only slightly more fun to be around and a great deal less in control. But the rest-- exactly so.
