FISH!
Tonight I went ot the miniature Lunar New Year festival held by the Asian Studies Theme Dorm House on campus, and I got 3 goldfish and a bamboo plant.
I named the the large orange and slightly spotted fish Tasuki. That's the name of my favorite orange-haired seishi in Fushigi Yuugi (The Mysterious Play). Fish!Tasuki almost escaped when we were retrieving him from the bucket, so I thought that was a fitting name. Fast and fiery.
I named the medium sized gray fish Mulder. Mulder drifts near the edge of the bowl then randomly darts in a different direction. I'm still working on the symbolism of this. I know there has to be some.
I named the very small, orange, hyperactive one Edward Elric. How could I resist?
I guess I'll have to buy fish food for them, and get them a proper bowl. Right now they're in my soup bowl, and that's where they'll have to stay for at least the night. How often does one feed fish?
I also got this bamboo plant. It's a cut chunk of bamboo sitting in a plastic cup, surrounded by little glass half-marbles and water. I have no idea how to take care of or raise a bamboo plant. I'm also not certain if I want to name it... it's kind of like naming someone else's dismembered finger, you know? One you're hoping will regrow into a full hand again, just on its own.
But anyway, I have goldfish! I've never had pets that were all my very own before. This is cool.
EDIT: I just googled goldfish, and apparently I need a tank. I was hoping I could get a fish bowl. I don't have room for a tank! I share a tiny dorm room! ::sigh:: Okay, maybe I can start with a bowl and work my way up from there.
