Aahhhhh...nostalgia. Spike/Buffy, my television OTP of OTPs. Fandom_wank brings back the memories.

[livejournal.com profile] avatar_fans, you think you have shipwars? You don't. You have ship pebble-tosses. Ship thumbwars. "You haven't even begun."

It's actually kind of nice though. Shipwars can be tiring (another reason I try to avoid the competitive side of HP fandom whenever I go back to it) and I've moved past the militant phase of my fandom youth toward the "lazy and self-serving" phase which focuses heavily on "ship and let ship" and "what do I care as long as I've got fic to read?"

I have never been militant about ships. I dunno... maybe ship wars are something new. If not, I just never noticed there being ship wars when I was active in fandoms years ago... then again, the fandoms I was interested in were... I supposed relatively small ones. ... Or I just wasn't paying attention. Was too busy fic writing, I guess.

Kind of missed those days.

They're nothing new. They're as old as fanzines-- meaning they predate the internet when it comes to fandom. I've been active in some form of online fandom for 7 years, though really only active in community/forum stuff for about 4 or 5 years, and they've always happened. But LJ has made a lot of stuff almost post-modern self-conscious in a way, so it's not considered polite to flat out argue about ships in general communities, just in ship-centric communities. Ship--centric communities can and do bash other ships, though. What amuses me about Avatar fandom is how strongly people react to the slightest amount of anti-ship stuff; they're hyper-sensitive to ship wars before they happen, so the only thing you ever see is vague squabbling. Shipper bashing is just rude (that's knocking the speaker instead of the opinion they voice), but I see nothing wrong with knocking the pairing itself, in the appropriate forum.

For example, when that person posted the anti-Zutara fanart earlier today on avatar_fans, I disagreed with the idea that what they were doing was satire, because it wasn't. I didn't really care about the fact that they were knocking my ship (it's so hard to care about the little stuff when 3/4 of the fic that appears is my ship), but I was annoyed that they thought what they were doing was "satire" and not just plain bashing. As a fan of satire I was offended, not a fan of Zuko/Katara. But that post would have been perfectly acceptable at a katara/aang community or [livejournal.com profile] the_shipper_state

Have to say... that I feel glad that things were such that I never became involved in a ship battle (and that such). I actually get tired reading arguments for this ship and that.

The one who posted the fanart at avatar_fans was a chatter in this week's Avatarchat. He (I think he's a he) said in chat that he was just being satirical. I didn't see the entire fanart so I can't judge properly if it was indeed satirical.

Heh... about satirical Zutara stuff being posted over at AxK LJ com. I'd rather prefer other stuff, but at this rate... anything would be welcomed right now. It's so quiet over there.

About satire in general - I think it's supposed to be funny, but eventhough I like to always have humor in my stories, I'll never claim to be an expert in satire. It's complex and has to be done just right.

By the way, some readers actually think my Incarnations Sillyfics is satire. When I realized that indeed it seemed I was making fun of AxK and Aang ships in general, I immediately placed a note saying that no - I wasn't making fun of any ship, seriously. Just wanted to tickle funny bones, not cause upset stomachs. I get ulcers; having an upset stomach isn't pleasant at all.

I agree with the initial comment from the F_W poster:

They're still going on about that? I never saw the appeal or whatever that is Spuffy (and I've been out of the fannishness of that fandom for so long, I couldn't begin to give reasons behind my opinions, I just remember I was like, "HUH?"), but honestly. It IS so 2003. Damn, will this be like the seaQuest fandom, where wank flareups of Bridger/Westphalen Vs. Bridger/Smith happen from time to time? And that shit was over ten years ago.

Heh... just wanted to say that I checked the satirical drabble thread at Avatarfans. I couldn't find the satirical fanart thread anymore.

Got a strange vibe against fic writing in general. Hopefully, the poster who said ---'This site is constantly bombarded with fic. I've had my disagreements and dislike to fic here, but never did I become a total butt over it' ---didn't actually mean what I think he/she meant.

Hmm... well... I suppose I could start doing fanart and fanmedia to express how much I like this show, but it just isn't my forte.

Just an update. It's okay. Apparently he or she only meant 'some' types of fics. He said he could have said that (points up to quote) better.

I actually prepared a speech of sorts just in case it was really anti-fic or anti-writing. (is sensitive about writing)
