I don't remember giggling this much last season. I think this season is funnier.
"The Blind Bandit"
New OTP!
Okay, now that that's out of the way...
I liked Aang's entry level lesson, and how he was taller than all the other kids. For once Aang's taller than someone.
Katara intimidating those boys was awesome. And then she did it again. And again.
But nothing, nothing beats Sokka's whispered "Watertribe." and accompanying hand gesture. That was seriously the funniest Sokka moment in the entire series so far. And kudos to the voice actor for note-perfect delivery. I'll have to make an animated icon of that as soon as the torrent is out.
His fanboy reaction to the "Earth Rumble" was also amusing, though it pushed the edge of tiresome after multiple references. But I have so much distaste for pro wrestling that even mocking pro-wrestling irritates me after a while. Still, his reaction to the signature was humorous, and I did figure out that "The Boulder" was obviously supposed to be "The Rock."
The thing Momo did where he jumped into the bag and curled up? Our cat does that. She cannot resist THE BAG.
The animation for the fights this episode were pretty nice, especially Toph.
And now, speaking of the newcomer! Toph... is totally awesome. Not so much because of her Madd Skillz (though they were quite Madd), but for her evil little laugh and her general glee at fighting. I mean, I thought Katara liked fighting (and of course she does, as her beating up the boys proved yet again), but this girl lives and breathes for fighting. Her glee at combat was a bit of an Azula resonance, actually, but in a more sportsmanlike way, and less sadistic. The difference being that Toph likes combat whereas Azula likes inflicting pain.
Her interactions with Aang? Instant OTP. And not just because she's the newest kid; I don't ship convenience. If I did I'd've been an Aang/Meng shipper last season, which I'm really not at all. I actually think that she's going to be a challenge to him... she's a lot like Katara (good at fighting, smart, brave) but without the mothering aspect. I think Toph would react, well, badly if Aang wanted her to mother him the way Katara does. Honestly, Aang needs someone to compete with his own age.
I see many laughs and battles and thrills of puppy love in their future.
Then I see tragedy and death. After all, the swamp shows you those people whom you've loved... loved and lost.
Hm. Still, it's too bad my theory of it being Aang's daughter never panned out. I didn't expect it to, but it woulda been cool.
The clip with the two Earthbenders and the father at the end was nice exposition for future episodes. Poor Aang, everywhere he goes he steps on toes. At first I was like "Is that father stupid? He must realize she ran away." But then I remembered how they treated her throughout the episode, and a big "Duh" hovered over my head.
But anyway... new OTP!
And speaking of OTPs... I'm laughing an evil, evil laugh as a Z/K shipper. Because, dude, I can read the foreshadowing, yo. I've been watching tv as a critically-minded viewer for a while, and these things ain't a deep mystery. Tally, anyone?
-constant barrage of ying/yang themes, fire/water themes, and moon/sun themes. Hell, Zuko, the prince of fire, lived for years on the freaking water.
-themes about the Avatar bringing together opposing forces to a better, more peaceful whole
-historical legend about lovers from opposing kingdoms
-unresolved competition between Zuko and Katara...and we already know both Katara and Zuko are the sort to hold a grudge about an unresolved competition.
-the fortune teller's prediction (actually, this doesn't quite contradict the possibilities of Toph/Aang OTP, either, because if Toph is someone Aang loses, that explains the lack of love in his destiny)
-introduction of a new female character who's Aang's age and potentially more suited for him than Katara would be...now I must go over to
avatar_fans and watch the Kataang ship slide right into a civil war. Ta!
Anyway, all that aside, no real ships are ever gonna happen on this show anyway. But at the moment, my television spidey sense is buzzing. I don't at all think it's giving them too much credit to read foreshadowing for what it is. The writers have already proved that they're not afraid of foreshadowing, and actually are quite fond of it.

Starving!Zuko!
memlu, look, it's Starving!Zuko! See how his cheeks are all sunken in? REDEMPTION THROUGH HUNGER PAINS! I so called that two weeks ago.
Also: hair check! We are approaching "spikey" at last.
Still, I'm sure even a Redemption Through Hunger Pains Arc won't get as much fandom attention as two little words:
Chibi. Zuko.

What about fashion conscious Sokka? That was pretty great!
I, too, was terribly excited when I saw the new almost!spiky hair. We're getting sooo close! Maybe Zuko will get sexy again. My fangirl level exploded off the charts when I saw the preview for the episode. Here's hoping it will be much fodder for new fics!

Fashion-conscious Sokka didn't get even a blink of an eye from me, because the joke of a boy being into fashion relies on a stereotype of boys that never happened with my brother. Between him and me, he's the clothes horse.
I didn't like Lupin III hair on Zuko for the last three weeks, but I know that spikey is a look he could do. Depending on how they draw it, it might look really dramatic with his scar, which kind of flares upward on its own. Either way, it'll be interesting to see hair and scar merge; all last season the scar was distinct, almost advertised by his hairstyle.
God I can't believe I just wrote a paragraph about a character's hair.
Still, I'll be happy to see Lupin!hair go.

That poster who posted that satire last week doesn't even know about the com apparently and I can't even remember seeing a Kataang fanart pimped on Avatarfans except for Kungpow's.
Maybe Kataang is more hopping over at Distant Horizons and other places, but not in LJ, as far as I can tell.
Still, my depression over how quiet the Kataang LJ com is aside, I'm very happy that Aang's got a very possible new love interest. Would love to see more fics and artwork starring Aang.
Your theory that Toph will die scares me...
As for next week's ep, I'm hoping it will help me see Zuko in a better light. Been feeling irked with him since last week's ep.

No, there really isn't. Almost not at all. About a month ago through several months ago people were talking about it at avatar_fans, but the truth is nobody really does anything and people stick to their own communities. Even when people were really pimping their ships at avatar_fans, the only conflict (like three or four times in as many months, and TINY!) that did arise came out of people complaining about fans of the opposite ship, not the ship itself. Most of that was a few kataang fans complaining about all the Zutara fans out there, and a few zutara fans being offended that anyone was ragging on them in particular.
Hence my complaint that there's no conflict of any interest in Avatar fandom, by "interest" meaning levels of zaniness.
I just checked the kataang comm a few hours ago, and I was surprised to see it so dull (I'd never been there before). The katara_zuko community is only midlly active, but we look like a festival compared to them. For all the people on avatar_fans who say they like kataraang, I'd expected there to be more of them.
Actually, I was hoping that there were lots of kataang people, and that half of them would spontaneously convert to Tophang people, thus inciting a civil war and accusations of people "betraying" the ship and all that other crazy stuff. Because then I could have laughed at the wank. This could be true if Sokka/Yue fandom had split down the middle, too. Wank amuses me.
Avatar LJ fandom, for better or worse, is mostly wank-free. Makes it easier to participate in, but not as amusing as other fandoms.
My sense of glee in the increasing possibilities of Z/K is more glee that "Hey, my insticts are looking more right every episode" than anything to do with aggression against pairings not my own.

Anyway, I'm really hoping that Zutara fanwriters and fanartists will also make AangxToph fanworks. I think it's only been this week that I've realized that I see so little Aang fanstuff.
This is probably the main reason why I'm shifted from Katara-centric to Aang-centric.
Heh... I don't know what is more bothersome... really active ship wars or a supposed ship war wherein one ship is like unmanned or abandoned.
This is why I had to post when you said that you were expecting civil war in the Kataang LJ com. Heh... right now, I even want a civil war to happen. Any activity over there is just better than nothing at all.
I dunno... maybe most Kataang-ers are multi-shippers like me. We just don't feel defensive and such.
(goes back to imagining Adult!Aang with Adult!Toph) Heh... if they marry, Aang's gonna be a henpecked hubby. XD

Then again, I don't hang out at avatar_fans much anymore, so if anything interesting happens I'd probably miss it.
Must get Toph icon.
Me like your fics. Me enjoy reading your journal.
Is it okay if I friend you?
