Furuba vol. 12, again

I'm rereading volume 12 of Fruits Basket, and volume 13 is waiting. It's so much better in the official translation! The dialogue...makes sense! The conversations follow a logical line of discussion and I can comprehend what the fucking point is!

It's so much nicer. I missed a lot of stuff back when I was reading scanlations. Like the whole Kagura & Kyo conversation thing-- my impression of that conversation was muddled and confused, but reading this time it was very clear and actually very moving. I also missed out on the crucial point of Kagura's confession the first time; I actually get it now. And Kyo! I love Kyo so much.

Shigure and the teacher's conversation was even funnier now that their sentences made sense. I'm so glad I swore off the scanlations for Furuba. I can wait. I can be patient and buy the official TokyoPop manga volumes. If ever there was a series I'd gladly spend money on for manga, it's Furuba. I just...gah. This is my favorite manga, no question. I enjoy Naruto but Naruto ain't got nothin' on the operatic-scale tragedy of Tohru Honda and the Sohma family. The level of character development and foreshadowing and detailed continuity just makes me swoon. (And there's the fact that I'm in fangirl love with half the Sohma boys--specifically Kyo, Shigure, and Haru.)

BTW, I'm still, in my heart, kind of a Kagura/Yuki shipper. I'd love to see them together in a few years, as comfortable adults. This is because I watched the anime first, I think.

EDIT - If anyone reading this mentions anything about FB to me beyond chapter 108, you will become as a pancake: flat and mushy and bleeding syrup, an abused piece of pan-fried pastry that no one wants to touch because you've been beaten to a whitish pulp and left wasted on the kitchen floor for three days.

I mean, seriously folks. There's few things that I love like I love the FB manga. You can spoil me for Battlestar Galactica and I'll whine a bit and feel some irritation, but that's it. You spoil me for Fruits Basket and YOU HURT MY SOUL. MY SOUL. I will gladly taken the label of paranoid and over-reacting and bitchy if it means people won't spoil me.

I'd totally make up some outlandish story just to be a snot ... but since my knowledge is limited to the fifteen episodes of the anime I saw, I couldn't lie convincingly. :(

Ahhh Fruits Basket. I have not actually read anything official past volume 11, though I've been spoiled on things and I grabbed the scanlation of the Kyo/Kagura conversation of heartbreaky DOOOOOOM as soon as I could get it (which was actually via [livejournal.com profile] octopedingenue), and it's just. SO. GOOD. Ow. OW for them both. I love Kagura so much... From her past appearances you do NOT expect her to handle it that way, but underneath all her crazy and super-girliness she's something a lot more. I have seen a few panels that she's been in lately but have no real idea what she's "up to" and I hope she comes back into the story in a good way. Kagura/Yuki? Had not thought of that, beyond seeing the pairing listed in a bunch of fanfics at ff.net and as a result discarding the idea. ;) Oddly though, since I started out really disliking Yuki and eventually came to love him deeply as a person (I'm utterly not attracted to him in any way, unlike Kyo and Haru, but I am sooooo protective of him as a character), that's a pairing that would make sense for me to ship. Hmmm.

Over all the Kyo/Kagura conversation fulfilled one thing for me in a wonderful way that many, many series do not do: it took one of my Impossible Pairings of Choice and spelled it out for the audience AND the unrequited character that it was never gonna happen, and gave closure in a respectful and satisfactory way. Thank heavens he didn't just hate her and avoid her forever; that would've been a disservice to both characters. The way that was handled was just lovely and it made me feel sick with heartbreak, but in a REALLY good way.

Yeah, following Fruits Basket in official translation is so important! Furuba is such a dialogue- and text- intensive series, and very subtle things are being said all of the time. The difference between official versions and the scanlations can be vast, sometimes!

(I followed the scans forward for quite some time, but over time there was a slow accumulation of "little things that made no sense" until I found myself actively not understanding the scans unless I gave them 100% of my concentration and backed up my reading with looking at other fan commentary. NOT the best way to appreciate FB!)

I've just started reading Fruits Basket, and I love it. It is really the only manga that I have read, or really had any desire to read. But I love it. And I love Kyo. And like you, I don't want to be spoiled because it is just so good and so emotional that it is just better to read as it comes. So much love!
