Doctor Who 4x01 - "Partners In Crime"

I still haven't watched the 2007 Cristmas Special, but I'll get to that later.

*******

Spiffy introduction. WHY DID I WAIT SO LONG TO START THIS SEASON? I miss my show. I miss my Doctor.

I thought they were working together, but now I don't think so.

"I'll be health, you be safety." "Bwahh...uh....." ::SNICKER:: Though I am totally with the saleswoman on this... if someone like him just came into my booth, and acted like this, I might give him my number too. Just for a change of pace.

Ew, this is icky. And...what happened to her bones?

The window-to-window silent conversation is hilarious. I loved their expressions, and I could just hear Tennant say "Donna?"

HAHAHA. "Are we interrupting you?"

"You look older."
"Thanks." For some reason, I love this four word exchange SO MUCH.

"I had this friend, Martha. She was brilliant. I destroyed half her life."

I love that she just invited herself. I think I like Donna.

"...she fancied me." Yeah, that's the Ten ego right there.

I love that she grabbed his hand and YANKED him. "Tardis! Come on!"

"Would you rather be on your own?"
"No...Actually, no. But..." Oh, good, he's finally learned to have this conversation BEFORE the trip.

"You're just a long streak of...nothing! Alien nothing!" AHAHAHA. I really, really like Donna. And I love this conversation. The actors are playing it wonderfully.

Holy shit, that's Rose! Or someone who looks like Rose. And she's just...blurring out of existence. Interesting. I thought she wouldn't appear until much later. I guess there will be more of these little cameos along the way.

What a sweet ending.

Do you know, I've managed to be COMPLETELY unspoiled except for the one casting spoiler? I'm like a freaking dodge wizard. I thank you, flist, for being great peeps.

Really, you're not missing jackshit with "Voyage of the Damned". Believe that.

"Voyage of the Damned"

oh...OH...is that what the Titanic crack was that Donna said? I was wondering about it. She must have been talking about the xmas special.

Yeah, that's it. You'll eventually have to see it, I suppose. But ... it's ... I could've done without, honestly.

Your joy is a pleasure to see! Seeing you at the beginning of s4 reminds me of how pleased I am with it and how it's made of at least 70% PURE AWESOME.

I'm glad you like Donna: Tate and Tennant have such good comedic, platonic chemistry!

Agreed with thoroughly enjoying S4. I haven't been excited about about seeing new eps with this show since ... I was mainlining S1. I was rather satisfied with S3, but that finale just killed it for me. Blech.

Blech, yes! My goodness, I was amazed by my own revulsion of the end of s3.
I have never hated an episode of television so much in my life. I'm so thankful they managed to pull the show back from that catastrophe and make it fun and lovable again.

IT'S A TIMELORD MIRACLE.

((dances joyfully))

I wholly believe the introduction of Donna and (OMFG) a new kind of Doctor/Companion dynamic - at least for NuWho - was exactly what the show needed. Even more amazing, she's made me LIKE Ten. God, I wanted to punch his face in most of the time in the past two series'.

I love Donna more than should be healthy. I can't believe she edged Zoe Heriot out of her Number 5 slot in my Top Five Fave Companions Ever! List. She's creeping up on Barbara Wright now!

I think you're really on to something here. I've only just come to like Ten this series myself (I used to fantasize about how he could have some Horrible Accident and become Eleven right quick). We needed, I think, someone who wouldn't take his issues to heart the way Rose did. Because Donna can roll her eyes at him and smack him in the arm, it frees us to roll our eyes at him and find his shit only mildly irritating, instead of unforgivable, since nobody's being hurt by it. At least, that's how it feels to me now. In addition to that, I think he himself doesn't go to the same extremes he used to, since he knows she simply WON'T PUT UP WITH IT, MISTER.

He was such a despicable, Nice Guy (tm) boyfriend type with Rose: self-absorbed, unsympathetic, whiny. And she always seemed so invested in him and their relationship that, when he acted like an asshat with/around her, I'd feel the affect it was having on her personality (like when he encouraged her to act like a selfish, horrible, uncaring person re: other people's suffering) and her feelings, and I'd want to choke his scrawny neck for messing her up. I think part of it was that she didn't stand up to him anymore really, for some reason.

I think he was a jerkoff to Martha for similar reasons: it's as if him knowing that a companion likes him very much in a special, squishy way tempts him to act like a spoiled brat.

I love Donna more than should be healthy. I can't believe she edged Zoe Heriot out of her Number 5 slot in my Top Five Fave Companions Ever! List. She's creeping up on Barbara Wright now!

I've only seen a couple eps of the First and Second Doctors, but Barbara very much impressed me! That Aztec headtress! And calling One out on shit, disagreeing with his insufferable ass. Zoe was such a clever doll! And boy, could she wear a pair of tight sequined pants. ;)

I went back and reread my stinging review of VOTD, and I'd forgotten I'd yelled, "When are you going to regenerate, you asshat!!!" at my computer screen.

Ditto, definitely, on the rest!

That Aztec headtress!

Zoe was such a clever doll! And boy, could she wear a pair of tight sequined pants. ;)

One of my favorite Zoe lines was, "The Doctor is almost as clever as I am!" And she made a computer overload just by talking to it. She's fantastic! :DD

((snicker))

[Charley, circa Seasons of Fear] ((gleefully)) Doctor, I know! We could poison him! Or drown him! Push him off a parapet! Garrot him with a book! He could trip on the laces of his ridiculous shoes! [/Charley]

((admires)) Her history knowledge was SO HOT.

Well... eh... I like Ten. I like him in a different way than Nine, but I like him just the same. And I disagree with about 60% of that characterization of the Doctor/Rose relationship. But to each his own.

But I totally agree that "a new kind of Doctor/Companion dynamic" was what the show needed. I liked the romantic dynamic of the first two seasons, but the "awkward unrequited broken romance" dynamic of the third season made me feel uncomfortable for all parties involved. I like the refreshing fun and lack-of-complication with Donna. We've exhausted the romantic angle (it ran its course with Rose and then was overdone with Martha) and it was time for a change.

Well... I like Doctor/Rose in general! It's really just Ten/Rose that bothered me. Nine/Rose was WONDERFUL; they were both flawed, but in ways that I loved like pie, instead of ways that disturbed me. And I've read some really well done post-Doomsday Alt!Eight/Rose fic.

OOh! I love Alt!Doctor/Rose fic. GIMMIE GIMMIE GIMMIE! ::greety hands::

Seriously, I love rose with either Eight or Nine from the Alternate Universe, though thankfully I've never read her with Alt!Ten. That would be too weird.

There's two really good alt!Eight/Rose fic series. The one I've known and loved the longest (in fact, I wonder if I've pimped it to you before?) is by [livejournal.com profile] tinuvielberen. It begins with Doomsday Dimensions, and continues on with The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, Prometheus, Emerald City, and Strange Attractors.

The author has lovely prose, fluid dialogue, a great sense of comedic timing and an equal gift for drama. She works out a really good backstory for the alt!verse and how it diverged from Rose's home 'verse, and she works in the most beautiful technobabble which is totally grounded in, like, actual research she's done into neato Quantum Mechanics stuff like strange attractors and and amusing physics geek limerick about a young lady from Bright, who traveled much faster than light, departing one day, in a relative way, only to arrive on the previous night.

The second alt!Eight/Rose series is by [livejournal.com profile] whochick. It's much newer to me (I discovered it about a week ago?), but my love for it is VAST already. It begins with the completed fic The Diamond Sea, which is fantastic and heartbreaking and has a really good Rose arc, and continues in the (one chapter away from being finished) W.I.P. The Sky on Fire, which has this great novel-esque sensibility, a really well researched location/adventure, and the growth of Eight/Rose's partnership as it becomes something really special.

whochick's stories have elements from the Eighth Doctor novels, which I hadn't read before reading her fic, which can be odd at first, but she makes everything perfectly understandable and it ends up enriching the story, imo.

Fallen Angel is a good multi-chapter fic by ponygirl.

(Speaking of alt!Nine, have you read a fic called Seed Pearls? It's alt!Nine with a human Nine, but it works out so beautifully, and the reason for human Nine being there and meeting Rose fits so perfectly.)

More Eight&Rose of varying quality here.

Notes: Shit, my link to Fallen Angel begins at the fourth chapter. Sorry! Be wary of that.

Also, the shippiness is around about the level of s1, with a touch of s2's bluntness every now and then. That is, things happen and feelings are felt, but the stories don't go for straight up Romantic Relationship stuff like some other fics do. I found them satisfying, though, because the development of the relationship and their partnership is so interesting and engaging.

I love that Donna is pretty in the sort of way that would never get airtime in the States, and that nobody really makes a fuss about it, or thinks she's ugly or something. She's brilliant, and that's that.

I love that women of different body types and at different stages of life get to be heroic and sexy and wonderful on this show.
