James Bond fanmix: "In The Middle Of A Gun Fight" - 13 songs for Casino Royale & Quantum of So

FANMIX!

In The Middle Of A Gun Fight
(or, why I love Daniel Craig for woobiefying Bond)

Track List (pretty much unspoilery)

1. "You Know What They Do To Guys Like Us In Prison" by My Chemical Romance - he closest to the mood that I associate with the new Bond... turmoil, rage, intensity, violence, and a little bit of craziness. Especially in Quantum of Solace. It's also fairly slashy, as songs go, and you can't have a male character as oversexed as James Bond without playing with the homoerotic implications anyway. In the middle of a gun fight, in the center of a restaurant... They say, "Come with your arms raised high!" Well, they're never gonna get me.

2. "Your Disease" by Saliva - Craig's James Bond deserves some rap-rock. I wanna take you down, but your soul cannot be found.

3. "Mirror in the Bathroom" by The English Beat, because we see Bond looking at his reflection a few times in the films, and you've got to wonder who he sees there. This song is also appropriate for all those glossy, shiny cars and those very expensive suits. Mirror in the bathroom, recompense for all my crimes of self defense.

4. "Bloodsport" by Sneaker Pimps - Throbbing, sexy, passionate, disillusioned. Sex and love is not a game--a game is something you can win.

5. "Send The Pain Below" by Chevelle, because this James Bond is hard-core and hard-assed, too. But somewhere, the last human part of him is suffocating, and soon will disappear entirely. I liked having hurt--so send the pain below, where I need it.

6. "Metal Heart" by Garbage, which works really well with James in the new movie, his touchiness and grief and anger. I wish I wasn't flesh and blood: I would not be scared of bullets built with me in mind, for then I could be saved.

7. "Running up that Hill" by Placebo, [livejournal.com profile] mswyrr's rec. A song for Bond/Vesper. It's got a creepy steady beat, and it's sad. Kind of like most Placebo songs, actually. And if I only could make a deal with God, and get him to swap our places, be running up that road.

8. "Strange Days" by Matthew Good Band, because I like me some angst, sometimes. Are you crazy to want this, even for a while? You're driving, it's rush hour. The cars on the freeway are moving backwards into a wall of fire.

9. "Greedy Fly" by Bush, because, well... because it's an awesome song. Bond's nothing if not a servant of his masters. I am poison crazy lush, built these hands to lift me up.

10. "You Cut Her Hair" by Tom McRae, a song that goes really well with Quantum of Solace's theme of Bond's damaging effect on the women surrounding him. I will find you still, move in for the kill. You cut her hair

11. "Apparition #13" by Thea Gilmore, because it's smooth and eerie, and definitely seems like it might be discussing amoral behavior. You've narrowed it down to the few or the many. You've narrowed it down 'till there's no space between.

12. "Into the Void" by Nine Inch Nails, for obvious reasons. Also, love the beat. All lined up (all the ones that arent allowed to stay.) Tried to save myself but myself keeps slipping away.

13. "I Come From the Water" by The Toadies, because I really liked that Casino Royale scene of reverse-exploitation. I love to see the sun in spite of all it's done. I pray for shade and rain. I pray to live again. I come from the water.

14. "Staring at the Sun" by The Offspring,* because Bond's still trying, dammit. And nothing can bring him down. If I seem bleak, well you'd be correct. And if I don't speak, it's cause I get disconnected. But I won't be burned by the reflection of the fire in your eyes.

Inspiration for this fanmix came from this discussion, which veers into spoiler territory for the new film Quantum of Solace and of course is terribly spoilery for Casino Royale.

*Oddly, this is also my song for Vash the Stampede, for different reasons. Yeah, weird analogy, I know.

((grabby hands))

Cool! Nice choices, and I like how you rounded it out with different moods.

While making this I came to the odd realization that I haven't really listened to or loved hard rock songs much at all since high school. I think it's because everyone I know on LJ always recs me indie rock stuff and love songs.

I'm weirdly obsessed with "mirror in the bathroom" since I made this mix.

"Bloodsport" is also a long-time favorite... I've applied that to so many pairings and characters, and it never gets old, and always can be re-interpreted.

"Mirror In The Bathroom" is a good song.

And "Bloodsport" is just classic.
