I don't feel like I was missing anything by not having heard this until now.

I just realized that the only Jonas Brothers song I've ever heard is their cover of Disney's "Poor Unfortunate Souls" from The Little Mermaid.*

my face at realizing this: >P

a. I hate their cover because they take one of Disney canon's most creepy, sly, and wickedly sung villain ballads... and make it bland.** Not too mention overpowering the melody with over the top drums and guitar. I thought everyone loved these kids for being so awesome?? They have no voice talent! None! I feel kinda let down. Talent: some people have it. Other people don't and should not sing songs that require it.

b. they change the Disney lyrics in the first verse but keep the lyrics in the second. It's pretty uncomfortable to listen to, actually, because the second verse is incredibly sexist, and the argument can be made that because it's being sung by an evil, murderous sea witch in the movie, you know it's words and lies coming from a Bad Person.

Coming from the Jonas Brothers...um, not so much. It just sounds even worse, especially since the thirteen year old fangirls are going to hear words like "It's she who holds her tongue who gets a man" from the famous teen boys they idolize... and not from an evil, murderous sea witch in the context of a movie. Am I wrong in feeling there's a significant difference there?

c. I hereby declare that no one is allowed to professionally remake songs from musicals unless they have a singing voice of equivalent talent levels. BARACK OBAMA, PLEASE MAKE THIS YOUR NEXT PRESIDENTIAL EDICT. THANKS, RASHAKA.

*Since I'm on an FMA kick recently: Dante and her 'Poor Unfortunate Souls'! (major anime spoilers.) Actually, this ATLA video is a much better watch.

**What the hell does the pool music video have to do with the song? And how are "secrets" supposed to help the people who want to lose weight and attract the opposite sex? Magic (and exercise) make a lot more sense. That's the problem with changing the lyrics of a musical without appropriate context update.

***I just realized that Lyra of FMA reminds me a lot of Mai of ATLA. Must be the bangs.

I know! And they're put out by Disney, aren't they? Jeez, they couldn't have picked a different song? Like something from Hercules? THIS IS MY CHILDHOOD THEY'RE POOPING ON.

...I can't stop adding to and editing the post.

I too only knew the Jonas Brothers by their cover of this song until they hit it big about a year or so back, although due to my remarkable ability to tune out lyrics and just listen to the instrumentals when the former is uninteresting or poorly done, I enjoyed it well enough. Interesting point about the effect of context removal, too; hadn't considered that at all, although given that they keep in rather ominous lines like "Now I've got 'er, boys, the Boss is on a roll!", I'd say at the very least the idea that maybe the person singing the song isn't as good-intentioned as they claim still makes it in. Then again, I'm not a JB fan, and I already know the original song in question; it'd be interesting to ask a JB fan who's never seen "The Little Mermaid" and hadn't heard the original what they thought of this cover...

Oh, and THANK YOU for finding an AtLA video that
a.) uses the original "Poor Unfortunate Souls"
b.) doesn't suck
and
c.) made me realize there was a combo OTHER than Azula and Ty-Lee this song made sense for. Honestly, I don't know why it didn't occur to me before; Hama matches up to Ursula better than Azula, due to being a sweet-tongued witch-like lady, while Katara fits better due to the whole "Merfolk" thing that's a bit of a reocurring theme in the song.

The one question that keeps running through my mind is "WHY?!" Yes, I know the Jonases are owned and operated by Disney but WHY THIS SONG?! WTF?!

If that makes you angry, Rashaka, they've also butchered THE BEST Golden Age Disney song "I Wanna Be Like You". That song was a terrific example of Scat jazz and they mad it to EMO ROCK WTF

It's the reason I've never listened to another Jonas song. I never even listened to their whold version of Poor Unfortunate Souls (my favorite Disney villian song ever, btw). But I really never saw it from a mysoginistic point of view until now.

Jonas 1: Can we get rid of magic talk? I'm uber religious and it makes me sad
Jonas 2: Yeah, but lets keep all the stuff about women keeping their mouths shut, maybe the tweens at our concerts will stop screaming so much if they think we like them to be quiet.
Jonas 3: Done and Done...ruining classics is fun!

Ugh..I hate Jonas
