15 first-line fics

bonibaru's journal. I think it's bitchin'. And i upp'd the number, because ten just isn't enough.
The First Lines of 15 Fics That Made Me Go Whoa:
1. She slowly became conscious of disembodied voices floating in the space above her head.
...In Wonderland by OverCastDay.LotR.
This fic is The anti-MarySue. Best description I can give.
2. So much had happened, but so little had changed. Momiji sighed, her breath forming a cloud that quickly dissipated and looked up from the stone cold lunch balanced on her lap to glance around at the empty park.
...Dreamer Awakened by Ruri Hoshino. Blue Seed.
The amount of Blue Seed fic available on line is sadly limited, but I don't care because this novel length WIP makes up for any lack just on its own fantastic merit. Characters, action, smut, plot-- what else does a great story need?
3. Xander pulled the car up near the delivery door half an hour after sunset. He knew the routine.
...Radiance by Kalima. Also titled as 'Daemons Luminati'. Buffy tVS.
Um...yeah. Like i actually need to inrotduce this. One of my favorite fics in Buffy fandom, and one of my favroite overall fanfics. Because it's B/S and Spike and Tara and fuckin' scary angels.
4. There are those who still speak of Erzsébet Báthory in hushed voices.
...COUNTESS by Scribe. Buffy tVS.
If you haven't smiled and cried and bit your nails over this fic yet... shame on you.

I have failed.
My vigilance has come to naught; indeed, I must admit with a heavy heart that I was unable to protect the Last Homely Home from this unforeseen curse. I truly believed our hidden vale to be safe...and yet It is here.

Best mocking of a Mary Sue fic I've ever read. Don't read this while drinking anything, seriously. Unless you want to clean it off your shirt and keyboard later.
6. To those that knew her, she was merely a shadow of her former self.
...Traitor to the Cause by The Black Rose. Gundam Wing.
The best frelling GW fic I've ever read. One of the best fanfics I've ever read. Just... fuck all awesome. Fantastic. You can literally reach out and touch the pain, love, fear, anger, and pure desperation these characters are feeling. You'll read all 30 chapters in one night, and hate yourself for staying up till 5am, but be so giddy over what you read you won't care.
7. The young king was bent over as he walked, assuming Bishounen in the Midst of Soul-Crushing Angst pose 23 - shoulders slumped just so, head down, hair obscuring the eyes but not the mouth which twisted to keep itself in a neutral position as bishounen tries to be stoic in the face of said Soul-Crushing Angst.
...It's Not Easy Being King, by Lyn. the Vision of Escaflowne.
Cause it's just way, way too funny.
8. The vamp holding Dawn growled, "I told you, Ernie,
go find your own dinner."
...Love Lies Bleeding by L.A.Ward. BtVS.
My favorite story ever to deal with the Spike/Dru/Buffy love triangle. And the best portrayal of Drusilla in a fanfic I've seen yet. It left me rocking.
9. Buffy tried not to look like she was limping as she walked up alongside the boundary wall of the cemetery. Limping did not say: Victorious Slayer on a Rampage--Fear My Kicky Boots! No. Limping said ouch in a small voice, and asked you to wait a moment while the limper rested.

Only the one of best fucking Buffy fics ever. And if she doesn't finish it there's going to be blood. Teddy bears and blood. And then a long recuperative process in which her only means of entertainment on the hospital bed will be Buffy tapes and a word processor.
10. Shadows paint him like a canvas. He stands in a nowhere alley, watching a nothing vampire sucking dry a no-one person.
...Cartography, bywisteria_. BtVS.
Still my favorite Alannafic. Still my favorite Spike vignette. I also rec her stories "Ten Thousand" and "Traffic Conditions".

Unusual, obscure dreams.

Gorgeous. Like art made into language. The perfect post-Restless fic.

Sexiest, dirtiest, darkest, cutest, most painful and emotional B/S smut on the net. I warned you.
13. There is a certain boredom factor that comes with slaying.
...Achilles Heel, by Elizabeth. BtVS.
I've read this at least four times. Favorite season 4 romance, and it gets to me every time. Also, it has what is still my favorite love scene between B&S in a fic.
14. Flames. Bloody right. You know I can now, love…might smart a bit, but I can now, love. Might smart. Might as well be on bloody fire…immolated…from the insides out. In there, burning, a light in the darkness. Bout to do me in.
...Half Gifts by Automated Alice. BtVS.
Stream of thought fic is an art form. Alice is a master. And I've never read a sexier, more engrossing, more poignant version of human Spike.
15. Newsflash: it was good to be alone. And she found, to her surprise, that she was good at it, too—the hours of solitude in the car, hurtling east to the strains of country & western music she'd never have sat still for in Sunnydale, the wind ripping through her hair, sun burning her left arm, were hours of contentment.
...What She Deserves, byherself_nyc. BtVS.
This broke my heart. See that bloody, gushing pile of red in the corner? That's my heart after reading this. But everything's going to be ok, or at least it might, because this fic also gave me the glue and the will to put it back together again.

He'd painted the windows with black colour and left out small spots, so he could peek outside.
There wasn't anything else to do here. His days were spent reading the hundreds of books the former owner of this house had left him, and watching the sea and the mountains turn from silver and blue to gold and red.
...Southern Exposure by Jules Aello. BtVs.
I loved this because it was different from any other Spuffyfic I've read. Season 3, and yet amazingly manages to capture the kind of Spike we met after FFL, and make it sound right and perfect. And, hey, road trips guided by psychic eavesdropping are always fun.

I love how it uses the Lord of the Rings as a sort of narrative, you know? She can hear him in her head as he reads it.. I loved that. I loved the whole thing. It was just so... original an idea for a fic.
