Drive by TrekXI fanfic rec!

For everyone who hasn't yet, if you love funny fanfics and you even mildly enjoyed the Star Trek movie, you really need to read "Four Consequences of the Unexpected and Unlikely Friendship Between James T. Kirk and Nyota Uhura", by [livejournal.com profile] trisfic.

Why is it awesome? There are so many reasons, but mainly, uh, it's a fic all about Kirk and Uhura as teenage girls. I mean "Bros." But more like sisters. With little bits of Spock and Scotty and Chekov in little moments of hilarious awesomeness that I can't quote back because I'd be quoting the entire fanfic. Which you should read. Promptly. Yesterday. THERE IS POETRY. And, um, a silent conversation scene that is just too funny to convey below.

"It's really not that different," Nyota said, prim voice and prim hands laid flat on her knees.
"Are you kidding me? Listen, Betazoid women when they're forty, they have this thing. It's called the Phase. Now, I'm not saying I have or I haven't, but oh my god. Alien life is beautiful. I hear." Jim slurped at his coffee.
"Jim, did you crash a PTA meeting when we were on Betazed?"
"Look, for your information, it was Ambassador Hwxeira herself. I mean, she told me about it. I don't know."

I am still sort of flailing to understand Trek lingo. Why is it called Trek XI or Trek AOS and what is Trek TOS and I am so confused. There is some Deep Space 9 thing and The Next Generation? This franchise has too many layers of history!

Things I've learned in the last 9 days:

XI = 11th movie
TOS = The Original Series
AOS = Alternate Original Series (I learned this today. I don't agree it should be called 'Series' because at the moment it's singular. and a film.)

What I already knew:

The shows, in order--

Star Trek
Star Trek: The Next Generation (Captain Picard)
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (Captain Sisko, DS9 is the name of the space station)
Star Trek: Voyager (Captain Janeway)
Star Trek: Enterprise (set before all the others in the series timeline)

Sprinkled throughout are the movies, which featured TOS cast and then TNG cast, and now the AOS cast.

There's a lot of stuff to catch up on. It's endlessly popular. There's probably more canon to browse here than even in Doctor Who, if you look at actual minutes on television, since each of those shows had 3-8 seasons.

If you liked this movie, I'd say start with the Star Trek movies, and only watch the show if you REALLY like it. Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan was the best movie until this movie.

Wait, wait... you mean, not all Star Treks are about Kirk and Spock?

...Whoa.

Haha, I think I'll just stick with doing what I've done for Doctor Who -- haven't watched any of the old series, but have a general idea of what happened. There's just too much of it.
