timepiececlock: (saava's bad house day)

[personal profile] ginmar, here's a rant you'll appreciate.

Tonight I was reading this long Draco/Hermione fanfic. I had made it all the way up to chapter 24/26, and despite its obvious flaws (there were several), the storyline was reasonably entertaining enough to keep me reading. But after 24 I had to stop and leave a review. The author, see, decided to fall back on this horrible cliche I've seen too many times in fanfic of all genres:

girl is arguing with/ unable to be with the boy she loves. A few days later, she is accosted and bullied by another guy-- either a minor character or a random stranger. Maybe he only threatens her, maybe he just grabs her arm, maybe he actually kisses and gropes her. But either way, she is sexually threatened. And who should turn up to save the day? The love interest boy, of course. After which he promptly scares off the bad perve boy, either by declaring that she's his property and he'd better back off, or by simply beating him up for "daring to touch her." Not, you'll notice, "daring to touch her without her permission." Nope, just "daring to touch her," because after all she's just a possession, right? And she belongs to him, right? And then of course the girl is distraut and so utterly grateful, that all she can do is kiss her savior and declare her love, or whatever. Not, as one would expect, does she say "Thanks, cutie," to the intevening guy and then stomp off to make her attacker's life a living hell, either socially or legally. Nope, she swoons and exclaims how scared and helpless she was and how she'd surely have been made "sullied" property if her man ::coughkeepercough:: hadn't come and stopped him.

God, it makes me ill.

This is why I typically follow a fandom where the lead females can beat the intestines out of men through their nasal cavities, or cause their skin to peel away with a few words. Because I don't need to read this shit.

Though I supposed that if Hermione wanted to she could beat the hell out of most guys either physically or using magic (The bitch slap in I think PoA?)

The bad thing is I've read way to many bad B/A and B/S fics that do the same thing.

You'd think so, wouldn't you?

The only ones where I've really noticed it among B/S (pretty much all I read) was with AU fanfics or past/1880 fics. One of the reasons I rarely read either of those, actually. Though I'm sure it's in non-AU fics too, I've seen it less.

Gaaaaah.

Of course, I just heard a twenty year old girl in my office say last week that women shouldn't travel alone, that it wasn't "safe" and if one of our female salespeople needed to make a roadtrip, one of the guys should go with her.

I resisted the urge to reach across and slap some sense into her. My boss commended me later for my restraint, although he did say he would have enjoyed the resulting entertainment.

good for you, then, for not starting a fight under such pressuring circumstances. Though I've no doubt it would have been entertaining. ;)

Maybe someone should write a reverse scene into a fanfic? Where the helpless boy is getting molested and has to be rescued by the girl? And not in a jealous, cat-fight way, either.

I love the fact that some people try to work shit like this into any BtVS fics, especially when you consider that Joss's inspiration was the idea of the pretty blonde in the dark alley fighting back!

When fanfiction's bad, it's really bad ...

Reminds of Riley/Buffy/Spike in ATW, 'cept not muhc with the actual physical bitch slapping.

doesn't make me think of that really, but if the analogy works for you...
