I watched Open Range tonight.

Boring story for the first hour and a half that felt dumbed down as simple as possible for the audience.

An abundance of cliches. Excellent acting of lame, predicatable dialogue. Totally stole the dog thing from Silverado, amongst many other so-called "homages" to older films.

The last hour had the best gun fight of any Western movie ever.

If they had only shown the gunfight from lead-in until finish, they'd have an Oscar-winning short film.

side note: my mom and I spent the last ten minutes on the ride home argueing whether the boy was supposed to have a French or Spanish accent. My vote was Spanish, but she insisted they'd said at some point that he was from New Orleans, and his accent was meant to be French.

He's from Texas and he was eating out of a café dumpster.

I believe he was spanish, cause they spoke spanish to him when they were trying to get him to hang on.

But DAMN was that not the BEST gun battle, ever?! Though, in my opinion, they over built Buttler just to have him die like that.

I thought so! And didn't he swear in Spanish once in the beginning?

It was. Which one was Butler?

He did swear in spanish and they screamed "ENGLISH!"

and Butler was the one that Costner came up to and went "You the one that killed our friend?!" and when he got an affermative BANG! dead.

the guy with the sling.

I didn't think he was overly built up. Maybe a bit, but I couldn't keep many of the bad guys straight anyway, and stopped caring about half-way through. That actor looked terribly familiar to me though.
