(no subject)

I watched some of this VH1 show "The fabulous Life of... Jennifer Lopez" while making a sandwhich.

They said she has over half a million dollars worth of fur in her wardrobe.

My god. Doesn't she feel guilty about all the animals that died for that? And apparently her favorite is Chinchilla fur. Has she ever SEEN a chinchilla? My day care used to ahve one as a pet. They are absolutely ADORABLE. Who could kill one?

forgive me for any forthcoming soapboxing. i don't have many fur issues (except for harp seal). personally, i think that anyone who isn't a vegetarian who is anti-fur is a hypocrite. ever been in a slaughterhouse? (i have.) anyway, onto the real issue at hand: chinchillas are way cute. but i wouldn't want one for a pet. & i probably wouldn't buy a fur, even though they have lovely coats. arguably, they look better on the way cute little animal. mink, however, are foul looking little animals...& i own several as part (or all) of various garments, but all of mine are vintage. i'm not sure how i'd feel about buying a new fur though. but nutria have fabulous pelts. yeah, i'd buy nutria. foul little animals that are a public nuisance.

what's a nutria? never heard of that.

[identity profile] ipomoea.livejournal.com 2003-09-09 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a big, ugly river rat. And by big, I mean big. About the size of a housecat. We have them here in Texas and Louisiana. Dunno about anywhere else.

Oh, and I'm one of those hypocrites. :) I'll eat meat on occasion (rarely red though) but I don't like fur when there's perfectly fine synthetic substitutes available.

Well, if J-Lo can convince me she eats the meat off the 100 or so Chichillas that were killed from her coat, I'll retract my complaint.

i think eating chinchilla would be a lot like eating squirrel. & [livejournal.com profile] ipomoea's right about the nutria action, however, when nutria are trapped/hunted, their meat is harvested (ick, but true) as well as their pelts. nutria fur is a lot like beaver fur and is fabulously dense, but unlike beaver (mink, chinchilla, etc.) nutria fur is very dyeable. some of the most fabulous colored furs are nutria. & they're derned cheap too.

yeah, i know i made some people angry. i'm sorry if i truly offended anyone. i was exposed to both animal rights and the glamour of fur at an early age. my opinions about fur are more than tongue-in-cheek, but i do love my mink stole, mink wrap, & mink-collared coats. dearly. & [livejournal.com profile] ipomoea, i've got to disagree with you on fur substitues. ;) faux fur is fun (i have not one, but two "hooker coats"), but there is nothing as warm as mink. (well, down, but i wouldn't be caught dead at a dogfight sporting the northface action.)

I forbid that anyone on my friends list be truly offended in my journal. In fact, I'll make that a rule: BEING HONESTLY OFFENDED BY ANYTHING EXCEPT JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE AND JOHN ASHCROFT IS NOT ALLOWED. You can only be offended at outside things, not people here. My journal is truly-offend free, a place of fun debate and lively argument, where respect is shared and mean people are mooned then shunned. :)

i reserve the right to be offended by the thought of ben affleck wearing one of j-lo's chinchilla ass-slings.

Ok, I'll add Bennifer to my allowed list. Because I seriously doubt anyone will be capaigning in favor of that anyway.

well, i think we can all agree that ugly animals deserve to be anally electrocuted.

(vegetarian, non-fur, non-leather wearing... still as much of a hypocrite as all the other big ugly hairless apes on this planet.)

You, ant-eater! To the anally electric chair! Now! Hyena, you too!

Though really, I don't feel bad for eating food that means killing animals. That's life. Fur for a new coat isn't vital to my life, however.

[identity profile] laurashalo.livejournal.com 2003-09-09 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Poor chincillas. They are darling. Not a vegetarian, but also not in favor of fur. I guess I just see it as eating animals is a bit more necessary than wearing them to look good. I've tried to be a vegetarian, but now just don't eat much meat. I guess it's the idea of the less harm I feel that I do, the better.

Oh, and hello. You're a friend of some friends so I thought I'd peek in on your journal, which I'm enjoying quite a bit.

I guess I just see it as eating animals is a bit more necessary than wearing them to look good.

That's how I fel about it-- brutality against animals that directly serves a primary need of my survival, brutality that goes on in nature every day anyway, is acceptable. Brutality for fashion isn't.

[identity profile] onetwomany.livejournal.com 2003-09-09 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreeing with the sentiment.

Eating animals is one thing. Breading animals for their pelts is quite another - especially given sheer number of the things that are typicallyy required to make one single coat. If people are insisting on wearing the things, then farming them is better than trapping, which was beyond cruel. But it's all unnecessary.

That said, it's not just fur. I've got issues with various livestock practices, too. Yes, we need to eat. But grain-fed cattle, piggeries and battery hens get my goat as well.

[identity profile] onetwomany.livejournal.com 2003-09-09 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Technically, it's any place where you raise pigs.

In reality, today it's a giant shed where pigs are kept in pens that prevent them from moving more then a couple of inches in either direction. The can not turn around. They can sit down only with difficulty. They never leave their confines. The husband of a close friend on my mum's use to run one. It was ghastly. All to produce the tastiest, grain fed meat.

How do they deal with waste then?

[identity profile] onetwomany.livejournal.com 2003-09-10 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
From memory, the pigs stand on a grate-like thing and waste kind of falls through. The would assume the pens do get washed out at times, or I'd hope so anyway!

LOTS of people, according to a friend of mine from Peru. Chinchilla coats are very, very popular.

The worst thing? Poor chinchilla's are so tiny, it takes like a hundred of them to make one silly coat.

My friend from Peru used to be my roommate, and her chinchilla was the cutest little thing. The only thing, though, it was a boy and for some reason he loved to burrow in my sweaters drawer and hump the sweater fur. ewwwwww.

[identity profile] irfikos.livejournal.com 2003-09-09 03:36 pm (UTC)(link)
even worse? that half a million dollars worth of fur? all thongs. ;-)

oh the (lack of) humanity!

[identity profile] laurashalo.livejournal.com 2003-09-09 03:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Why would I not be surprised if that were really true? ;)

LOL.

Perhaps it is because I'm a cat person...
