Revenge Film Weekend

This will be the weekend of revenge films, I've decided.

Today after my shift at Coldstone ended I walked an impressive 18 feet (give or take) to the line to buy movie tickets. I paid a murderously (I should sick El Mariachi on their tyrranical oppressive asses) high price for a single ticket, bought popcorn and a hot dog, and sat back to watch Once Upon A Time In Mexico.

I loved this movie. I want to see another Agent Sands movie.

I can't help it. I would have liked the movie anyway (despite it being more serious and less cartoony than Desperado), but instead of paying proper dues to Antonio Banderas, I spent move of my time snickering at Johnny Depp's character. And he was a character, too. God, his lame outfits (I loved how the black outfit, despite being tacky, sort of became like an armor, or a uniform for his character). And the blood. I could spend a whole nother movie only to watch Johnny Depp go around with dramatic blood staining his awesome cheekbones.

I can see why critics complained about the plot. There were too many characters, and it took too long to explain the plot (when it could have been given to us in a shorter amount of time.) However, the cinematography was beautifully stylized, the fights were great, the Banderas was cool, the Salma was unbelievably pretty, and the Depp was... so far from being cool that he was, inversely, too cool.

I think it wasn't until the second half or even final third that I really began to appreciate this movie. Before, I was just going along for an interesting ride with no direction that I could see, but it was nearer to the end when I decided "Okay, I kinda sorta love this movie. It's got flaws, and my favorite character shoots people for the dumbest reasons, but I kinda sorta love it."

How stupid was that arm thing? It was so stupid that it worked and it cracked me up. It was like those things that cartoon spies do, not real spies. Cartoons and Agent Sands, it seems.

::snicker:: I love it when Sands' hired man comes back later with "And since I'm a Mexi-can, I can do whatever I want." That was such a stupid joke on Sands part, that I loved to see the other guy repeat it later.

How cool was it that Agent Sands said "Savvy?" I want an icon that flashes back and forth from Captain Jack and Agent Sands saying "Savvy". Depp should say that in every movie he does.

I liked that they had another little boy to help out, like the little boy in Desperado. The interactions between Agent Sands and the boy (who definitely could have picked a much better idol / role model) were my favorite parts of the whole movie.

I was sad for Salma Hayek's charcacter (I want her outfit, and I want to be able to wear it that well), and for their daughter that died. I really felt that El had lost all reason to... well, do much of anything.

Where El Mariachi spent the whole movie dead, Agent Sands spent the whole movie alive. Where one was down, the other was up. Where one was reacting, the other was planning planning planning.

I had a soft spot for the retired FBI guy. He was the only person in the movie who didn't kill for the sake of killing, even though he was on a revenge trip as well. I was glad that he got his man and didn't pay for manipulation the way Sands did. I couldn't place the actor though; he seemed familiar.

I can't say that Sands didn't get what he deserved by losing his eyes. As a long time fan of Mexican food, I whimper at the loss of a good cook. And he was kinda psycho. A funny psycho. Nevertheless, I was sad for him (even though, if anything, it made him look even cooler) and I'm glad that he didn't die. He was as much a "villain" as the rest of them, but I'm glad that he didn't die. I think because he has such a force of will-- to survive, to be in control, to do his job (or what he thinks his job is), to make things happen-- that I would be sad if that will to live was destroyed. You can't not respect that kind of perseverance. The little boy said as much in the end.

OoooooOOOOooh--weird ass thought ahead. What if Agent Sands (with eyes) were to become a Highlander-style immortal? I can just imagine him riggin The Game, and his take on the whole system. That would be pretty frelling funny. I'd watch that movie.

Whoever did the costuming for Agent Sands should get a bonus, seriously. His outfits and disguises were so outrageous that they deserve a hefty extra for holiday season.

Overall score? Thumbs up. But some of you might hate it. You'll probably either like it for what it is, or hate. I liked.

One last thought: Bull-fighting? I'm so with Sands and the bull on that one. I will never go to one of those shows of my own free will.

Today it was the Mexian style Spagetti-Western revenge film.

Tomorrow, after work: it will be the Samurai-style revenge film, Kill Bill.

I read your forkfic! It was funny. I also stayed up last night to read "After the Dust Has Cleared" by Miss Becky on fanfiction.net, which is sort of like a Buddy-fic (only more sad than funny)that takes place directly after the movie. That's good. I'm not certain about the characterization, but it totally works within the story.

yeah, the characterization wasn't the best, but I loved the plot. Very fun.

My stuff is all in my memories under "Agent Sands"

Did you think it was neat that in the end of Desperado the little boy hero-worshipped El, but in the end of OUaTiM the new little boy hero-worshipped Sands? It made it seem even more like Sands was the main character too. I think when I get the DVD I might count up their on-screen minutes and see who actually had more. I think El would win by just a smidgen.
