Supposed to write something about happiness for my poetry class. Feh. This is what I come up with tonight. Real happy, huh?

***

I open my mouth.

Hi,
My name is--
I like--
We could--
Maybe if--

I hope my hair looks okay.
Do guys like girls who don't wear makeup?
My teeth looked yellow this morning
What if they look yellow now?
Don't smile too big, just in case
Maybe he doesn't like me
Rejection would hurt, I bet
Oh god, he's looking at me now
I can't go out with someone whose cuter than me
Done propositioning for today, that way lies pain
Pull back, full stop at the red light ahead!

I close my mouth.

Sorry.
What I meant was,
Do you have any white out?

***

A happy one this time? Third time's the charm I guess.

Happiness

Singing in the car
and finding out
that my voice turns on her phone
And finally technology proves
what we've both denied forever

If I've already become my mother
well, that's ok with me
Because she always has chocolate
like magic, I don't know how she does it.

***

Nope, okay, that one didn't work. Think, Shaka, THINK! It's supposed to be a poem that takes place over only a few seconds or minutes! And the title didn't fit that one anyway, too simple. Let'd try again.

Happiness

I stare down at tiny hands
They wrap my knees and he
The little he, he stands

Big melty eyes tilt up at me
Rosey lips wide to giggle
I smile too when he smiles for free

I want to reach down to tug
Him into my arms, but daren't interrupt
My first voluntary hug.

***
::sigh:: My one-year-old cousin is the prettiest toddler I've ever seen. I think that sounds happy enough.

It's like this unexplained talent. We could be out on a baot in the middle of the Indian ocean, and I'll say "Mom, do you have any chocolate?" And after a proper amount of needling, she shares chocolate. And we have no frickin idea where or why she had it, but she always does.
