Fruits Basket
I've been watching Fruits Basket in the last few days. I have to say, I love this show. Usually, high school romantic comedy school is not a genre I like much in anime/manga. Ranma 1/2 was the only one, really, and that was more a fighting anime than a soap opera.
Nevertheless, I've been completely sucked in and charmed by Fruits Basket. I've seen up to episode 23 by now, and I'm going to watch the last eps today as well. One thing that I like is that the series is almost over, and yet I still can't tell if Tohru likes Yuki or Kyou more. She seems to like both of them, equally. They both clearly are crushing on her... and it looks like she just doesn't want to choose, and would prefer they continue the simple friendship forever. All three of them are afraid to break the status quo and complicate things. Will it ever be resolved? Since there's only three eps left that I have yet to see... I'm thinking not. But there is always the manga, which extends past the anime. ::grin::
So far my favorite episodes are 18, 19, and the Valentine's Day episode, and episode 3, and episode 5, and the hotsprings episode. And I admit it, I'm definitely a Kyou fan. Though all the characters have worked their charm on me.
I think what I like about this series is that some stuff is so obvious and outright and made clear (particularly because of the nature of Tohru as the main character, since it's mostly her POV), and yet other stuff is very subtle and relies on the audience's intuition and intelligence.
I love the completeness and thoroughness of the overall metaphor of the show: that the curse of the Souma family that makes them change into animals when hugged by someone of the opposite sex is like the physical manifestation of the fact that they are all very isolated and unable to connect to others. And it seems such a silly, funny curse... but it really is a curse for them and the people around them, and it sets up some very tragic situations. I spend most of this series smiling like an idiot... and I spend the rest wanting to hug all the characters and have a long cry.
Now, time for lunch! And then on I go to the last 3 eps!

when she first hugs them and they turn into animals?
That about did it for me. They've started selling the series in target (of all places) - I have eps 1-18 on cd-r, but I need the last eps. And I've kept an eye out on the manga, but the question of who she chooses doesn't seem be answered anytime soon.
I have a crush on Yuki. I think it might be because of the hair.
Hair solidarity!
Re: when she first hugs them and they turn into animals?
That was cute!! I also really liked when she first transformed all of them, and was running around crazily and they all had sweatdrops.
I actually didn't care for Yuki's personality much at first, because I thought he was kinda boring, but he grew on me. His interactions with Kyo are so funny, and Shigure and Ayami too, because that's when he really lightens up. I think I liked Yuki the most when he was angry at someone, because it meant showing emotions other than aloofness or sadness. Although, I also really felt for him in regards to his fear of Akito. And his care for Tohru is endearing and genuine.
I really liked how developed all the main characters were in this series. Though there's a lot of cursed relatives who only have one or two eps to introduce themselves, by the end of the anime you really feel like you know the Tohru, Yuki, Kyo, and Shigure, like they're people more than characters.
The last 8 eps are great! You have to watch them. ::sigh:: I just finished #26. Very emotional. I'm kind of glad that I finished the anime before the manga, because the anime has an ending that I think stands on its own. But I also really want the manga now. :D Because I need more! I think the last ep did give one of the guys a slight nudge ahead in regards of chances with Tohru, but it's definitely debatable for either side. It really leaves the whole thing open for more seasons to be taken from the manga. And yet there's a sense of conclusion too. I don't want to go into any more. :)

::laugh:: I have a crush on Kyo. I think it might be because of the outfits. I love the way he dresses on the show, especially his khakis and black shirt ensemble, though his other outfits too. If I had to date any anime character from any fandom based on their clothing choice, it'd be him. That's exactly the kind of clothing I think looks hot on guys.
I'm so glad that someone else has watched some of it! Now you have to watch more so we can talk about the ending!
Do you have an FTP downloading program like BulletProof FTP or something of that nature? Because I know an FTP site that has a lot of anime, including all of FB. I chat with the girl who owns the server sometimes, and she likes to know people are accessing the anime that she puts up. If you want I could email you the info for that.
Can I ask... how much were they at Target? And in what format? I'm thinking of buy it in DVD...
yeah, I use WS_FTP pro
and I'd love that.
*G*
They're going for 19.99 a volume at target, and on DVD only.
Re: yeah, I use WS_FTP pro
I'm assuming we're talking about the FTP? Yep.
Re: yeah, I use WS_FTP pro
I'd love to get the last eps.....
finally, another reason to love my DSL.
Re: when she first hugs them and they turn into animals?
I've only made it through episode twelve (I'm still waiting for the last two DVDs I ordered to come) but I am loving it so much. Which surprises me, because like you said, I'm not usually a fan of high school romantic comedy thing.

I love Kyo too! He is by far my favorite, and I'm hoping that the statement you made about one of the guys getting slightly ahead of the other in regards to Tohru is him!
