So apparently people don't talk to you unless you have AIM.

I got AIM once, a long time ago on another computer, and it dropped eggs everywhere with ads that spouted and spurted and wouldn't go away.

I wouldn't mind usings AOL Instant Messenger, but for all the crap it would drop on my computer.

Is there like a crap-free, ad-free version?

I've never had a problem with ads. The only ads I ever see are of the animated gif variety at the top of the buddy list, and since I usually have that minimized, it doesn't bother me. Once in a while one has sound, but again, if the list is minimized, I don't hear it. I've never had AIM install spyware or adware.

If you don't want to install AIM, you can use AIM Express--it's a web-based Java version of AIM, so you don't have to install anything. That way, you shouldn't have to worry about the spyware and all. You just have to go to http://www.aol.com and click on AOL Instant Messenger.

Ugh, I have AIM now and it annoys the bejesus out of me. I only use it to talk to certain people who are the anti-MSN, for some unknown reason. And you're right about people not talking to you unless you use AIM. What the hell is that? Snobby AIM people.

Snobby AIM people.

Exactly. Why should I bend to their will? They should bend to mine-- MSN.

I use Trillian Pro instead of AIM. It's kind of neat in that it combines all the instant messenger engines - AIM, Yahoo, ICQ & MSN into one interface. The basic version is free, but a bit buggy. Still, it seems to work pretty well.

*points to above comment* Ditto on that (the multi-program, one interface is very handy), although I am poor and use Trillian Basic. It does what it needs to do, with no bells or whistles on (but no pop-ups, either).

Huh. I'll have a look-see. Thank you.
