octopedingenue's package came in the mail today. Yay! I watched Fruits Basket episode 13 over lunch.


I adore episode 13... it is one of my favorite. It captures the great duality that is Fruits Basket: it has the funniest scene of the entire series, but it also has the most unsettling scene too.

The funniest scene of all of Furuba being, of course, the long class coridoor argument involving Yuki, Kyo, Tohru, Momiji, and particularly Hatsuharu and the class president. I laughed so much the first time I watched that scene that my mouth started to hurt from smiling. It sill gets giggles out of me-- I actually might put it as the funniest scene in any anime I've watched yet, or at least in the top three ranks. I :heart: Haru and his double personality so much. The English version was wonderfully done, too, just as funny as the original. This episode is one of the most well done of the dub.

The most unsettling scene of FB is, of course, Akito's confrontation with Yuki. I wouldn't say this is the saddest scene of the series (that comes later), but it is probably the darkest moment of the show. Particularly because the incident is not sugar-coated and skimmed over like Momiji's retelling of Hatori's eye being ruined, or Momiji's own story about his mother. Instead the audience has to stand there with Yuki and endure the pain along with Akito's creepy voice.

This show is so amazing. It's really one of the most well-written anime/manga series I've ever come across.

Corridor scene=Scene of DOOM (the good kind of doom).

I remember watching that for the first time with octopedingenue and clodia_risa, and my jaw dropping at Haru...y'know. And then laughing for like ten minutes. It really is one of the very best episodes.

There's no way this show could ever qualify for Toonami without losing little gems like the coridoor/bathroom scene. I keep wanting to see FB on Adult Swim. I want to so bad.

I know! Same here, exactly. I couldn't believe that I was actually watching anime when they had that scene with Haru and the bathroom and the...hair color issue. I'm not used to anime being that... blatant yet subtly so at the same time.

There was no imagery whatsoever, but somehow the reactions of the characters made it seem a hundred times more scandalous than seeing a flash of chest in Ranma 1/2.

Also, it was funny as hell. I couldn't quite believe I was actually seeing it, but it cracked me up big time anyway.

Haru's English voice is my favorite (I feel most appropriate) of the dub cast, and I loved how that scene turned out on the DVD.

That episode also had some cute Kyo/Tohru stuff too... :)

That was so cute. And I love how he just had to glare and suddenly they were terrified. Though I would never tolerate that kind of caveman machismo in my boyfriend, I'm not Tohru.

Then again, if it was KyonKyon I might be able to tolerate anything... he's so sweet.

I think what made it so great was that there wasn't any imagery--what actually would have taken place in there could not be nearly as hilarious as what goes on in our heads.
