For

octopedingenue,
mooness, and the other FMA-addicts on my list.
A raw teaser snippet from the beginning of my Roy fic, episode 25. Kinda jerky on the transitions, but I'm just happy I've finally gotten started.
Day and night rolled past Roy Mustang’s window with a quiet rumble. Deserts turned to grass plains, and grass gave way to trees. The hours to Central City passed in the tapping of the colonel’s fingers, the shifting of his boots against the carpeted floor. His mind plunged downward with the bump of the track and he could not stop looking at the horizon, where all sorts of shit was happening that he had no grip on.
He glared at the windowpane as if he were ten again, and the other boy on his street had decided to break into school after hours to steal all the chairs in the classroom and put them in the cornfield, but this time leaving Roy to find out about it with everyone else.
“So you won’t in trouble again with your pop,” the eleven-year-old had said with a snicker, pushing his spectacles up on his nose with a superior grin. “Besides, I need someone on the outside when the national military comes for me and my parents and all my cousins and aunts and uncles.”
Roy remembered tackling the boy to the rocky grass, punching for all he was worth and roaring that he would never ever bring pie or books to such a traitor no matter how foul the dungeon he was throw into, or how rarely he got to go outside. He could eat rats think about all the trees Roy would be climbing and the creeks he would be swimming in while the other wasted into a horrible death.
"So much changed," he whispered to the passing scenery, hand blindly shuffling through his carry-on bag for a pen. Now Roy gave the orders, and Roy laid out the scheme, and the military had no need to come for them, because they both ran to it. Still he couldn't shake the memory of a boy asleep in his bed, and another boy out in the corn at night, alone.
When he reached the city Roy was going to deck that mother hen right there on the platform, roast the cuffs of his pants til he danced, then make sure to teach the man's daughter a new swear word so the effect of his anger could be truly comprehended.

I'm one of those Dynamic Duo fans who thinks that since there's no specific date given for when the two met... they must have been friends since they were kids! And I bet Hughes was a rambunction kid... the kind who always had ideas and talked too much. And Roy was probably an equally energetic child, but I imagine Hughes did most of the brain scheming... so you have a bit of a reversal when they grow up, and Roy becomes the leader in the pair.
At first I was gonna have him steal the class pet, but I wondered if they had class pets. Then I decided they definitely must have had chairs, so he would steal the chairs and put them on the roof. Then I remembered that they're supposed to be like 10 and 11, not 16. So the corn it was...
I was going to have Roy reflect and compare himself to Edward at 10 or 11 (who was much more tragic... I imagine Roy as having a pretty normal childhood), but the flow of writing didn't go that way.
I am going to make you sad.
