On a lark, I made a list of what I consider the "Ten Spoilers Of Doom" for FMA. I'm not going to post it, though, because I know some people on my flist are watching FMA for the first time. But if you're curious, or want to compare lists, leave a comment and I'll show you mine.

7. Scar dies! And creates the P.S!
8. Hohenheim is NOT the big bad!

Ah... Greed's death. For some reason, the deaths of the various sins never ranked high on my spoiler list. I guess it was just something I expected in the general sense.

AND SQUISHY!)
8. Hohenheim is alive and several hundred years old and used to be Dante's lover/husband!

Although, I'm totally changing my number 2 (they're chronological) to your number 7, because "you totally spend the first part of the series watching him being all ambitious and manipulative and expecting him to turn out to be a total bastard, and then he's a SECRET ROMANTIC IDEALIST! AND SQUISHY!" ... is like what made me a Roy fangirl. the whole SECRET ROMANTIC IDEALIST thing. Just makes my heart go pitter-patter.
The whole "Tucker is alive and his head is pasted on yay!" *is* a pretty good spoiler, I admit... I was pretty damn surprised. And scared. And OMGWTF?!ed.

1. Nina.
2. Scar and Lust's connection
3. Roy killed Winry's parents.
4. Hughes.
5. Wrath - has Ed's limbs, switches mothers with Ed.
6. The Philosopher's Stone can only be made with human lives.
7. Hohenheim and Dante are like four hundred friggin' years old and varying levels of Eeeeevil.
8. Ed DIES.
9. Roy.
10. Al returns. And is flesh again.
I don't consider the fact that both brothers sacrifice themselves for the other to be exactly a SPOILER, nor the fact that they each survive to be one, since the first is well in-character and kind of logical and the second is pretty easily guessed 'cause of the movie. But I didn't expect young, soft-bodied, brown-gold-eyed 10-year-old Al to come back. Now I gotta see yours. ^_^

Interestingly, more than one person noted Hoenheim's age as something whereas that didn't make my top 10, instead I had "Roy starts a civil war" and no one else seems to have had that.

Actually, I wasn't surprised by the fact that they both sacrificed themselves either (I knew it would happen as soon as Ed died), because as you said it's in character, and I wasn't really that surprised that Alphonse came back human, or that he'd lost time & memory. What I was suprrised about was Ed's initial death. Because I was *certain* he would be safe because of the whole movie thing. And then he DIED. And although I knew Alphonse would bring him back, the shock of him DYING was just killer.
I also didn't include the fact that the philosopher's stone is people on my list, because although it was a surprise, I don't rank it enough for my top 10. it'd be in my top 15 though. (although, because of FMA I'm now totally ruined for the movie Soilent Green. Which is okay.)

I had been expecting Hohenheim to come back (and be evil, as I suppose everyone else expected *G*), but hells if I expected what they did. I was also blown by the Dante thing, which started out so small; she's the woman who taught Izumi. She's killed mysteriously. *blink* Wait, if Greed was locked away for 100+ years, and Dante made Greed, then... waaaait... Anyway, the waiting for that was a great part. I considered most of my best spoilers to be the ones that made me go "WHOA!", which is why things that aren't all THAT important (in the great scheme of things) are on my list. Also I guess I actually didn't think of that Roy thing...
What I was suprrised about was Ed's initial death.
Oh my GOD yes. Like you say - it wasn't that we didn't know, even when he was killed, that he'd come back somehow... It was just the unexpectedness and the VIOLENCE of it. It's such a harsh death. There's no way that can't take you offguard.
I also didn't include the fact that the philosopher's stone is people on my list, because although it was a surprise, I don't rank it enough for my top 10.
I kind of debated on it myself, but I think it's such an unexpected thing - you don't anticipate that it would truly be that HORRIBLE for them to get what they want, even though you know it will be hard - that I ended up putting it there even though it wasn't as much of an "OMG" as a lot of other stuff.
