No one expects the Fanfic Inquisition.
April 27th, 2005 -- FanFiction.Net would like to address a growing problem. For whatever reason, some writers feel it's okay to copy-n-paste musical lyrics they have not written into their fiction. If you did not write it, do not post it. This has always been our policy. Please remove these entries immediately to avoid account closure.
Um...wow. Okay.
"If you did not write it, do not post it."
By that rule taken not much farther, fanfiction itself is unadmissable.
Also, cutting out songfics? WTF? I mean... that's a fanfic trend I've long since grown out of, but you can't take that away. That's an integral part of the fanfiction community.
So if not songs... what's next? What about quotes of famous authors/movies/speeches at the beginning of the chapter?
What about fanfiction where you transcribe your own version of a given scene? It's not your dialouge, so does that count?
What if you use a song lyric for a chapter title?
::shakes head::
This seems unreal. The ff.net maintainers had to have known about songfic for ages. But worse than that, this really would hurt fics like
I'd say this was a joke, except... well, it does seem to be right there on the ff.net front page.

If it's not quoted, it's often in chapter titles or the fic title itself. I like to incorporate music into my fic in little ways.
It's fucked up.
wow, seems very weird

I know!
Jeez. I thought they were being silly when they banned script-fics. But now this... this is just nuts.

Crazy.

I would guess that ff.net are making a fuss because someone in the music business has seen something they don't like and is making noises and getting execs to make threats. At the end of the day, the fact that the fics are freely available rather than offered for sale doesn't make any difference - if they breach copyright, they breach copyright.
Damn complimacated, innit?

I didn't know about that ban.
That's so...stupid. Like really really stupid. That's even STUPIDER than the lyrics ban.

July 27th -- FanFiction.Net Content Guidelines have been updated to reduce the apparent confusion of two rules:
Chat and script format are the same. We have not allowed chat/script format for years.
Choose your adventure and second person/you based are interactive entries. We do not accept interactive stories.
Because as any fool knows, second person voice = interactive story. Just ask Ian Banks. -_- Fucktards.

It just bums me out; I finally hit the 100 story mark.
Also, I wish there were another single site that's as comprehensive as ff.net, with a favorites system and review system, etc.
Sits like allaboutspike are great for single fandoms, but not every fandom has them and I long for another mass, multi-fandom archive.
