Dr. Who

9th Dr. Who - Bad Wolf

Oh WOW.

General

Okay. Wow. More interesting than it looked from the preview, though the way it's all tied together sounds kind of tenuous. If the Daleks are really like coffeepot Terminators from planet Krikkit, then why would they run the long game? Why waste the time? I can only guess the long game is the creation of the person's voice we heard in the promo. No idea who that would be.

Jack Appreciation

"I was just saying hello."
"For you that's flirting."

Jack/TARDIS OTP FOREVER! The Doctor got himself a girlfriend in Rose, and the TARDIS got herself a boyfriend in Jack.

I  Jack yet more still. What a wonderful addition to the show. And I love how the three of them are a total unit and that feeling's carried over from last episode. He was every bit as upset/angry about Rose as a good friend would be-- there was no awkwardness in his reaction that comes from not knowing her very long. Which leads to my next section...

Shipwatch

"Rose."
"Yes Doctor?"
"I'm coming to get you."

I love this ship so bad. My love for this ship knows no bounds. Only 12 episodes and I love it SO much.

The Doctor, especially in this scene, reminds me of Uzumaki Naruto. When he says he'll rescue you against impossible odds, you can believe it. You can't not believe it. Because you know, you KNOW that if he says it, then he's really gonna do it. Because that's what he does.

Although no vows have been exchanged nor kisses given, I feel like in the last three episodes we've been told that they're in love. First there was the dancing and flirting, then there was Rose choosing him over Mickey and the Doctor watching the two of them jealousy.

And then in tonight's episode... His reaction to her death? He shut down. He totally shut down. The way he touched her dust. And then, he's back, with the anger that can destroy worlds and move galaxies. You don't fuck with the woman the Doctor's in love with, yo. You just don't do that.

And then when he refuses to play the "Rose is a hostage" game with a Dalek again, and when he promises he's going to come for her...WOW. That wasn't an "I'm going to rescue my friend/subordinate/sidekick" speech. That was an "I love you, wait for me, believe in me, I'm coming for you," speech.

I need fic soooooo badly.

EDIT: He said they visited ancient Japan! SAMURAI CHAMPLOO CROSSOVER! BLADE OF THE IMMORTAL CROSSOVER! HUZZAH!

My ship-o-meter was off the charts for this episode. SO MUCH LOVE OMG. I'm really not coherent at this moment, so I'll just be over here. Squeeing.

SO MUCH LOVE OMG is right. Wowsers. His expression when he said he was coming to get her, the way he said her name...

You know it totally just figures that he'd lose his whole race exterminating the Daleks, and then they'd survive anyway after giving him the false sense of security believing them dead. Poor Doctor. Guy can't catch a break, can he?

He really, really doesn't. The best line of the episode (aside from his Rose lines which are in a completely separate category by themselves) is when he tells them he doesn't have a plan - and that scares them to death. I love my dark, manic Doctor.

Do you think the next one will be light and chipper in contrast? Cause I'd miss that edge...

The way it is now he has two major sides to him: one side is Mr. Broody Ears (we say that with affection). Mr. Broody Ears is quick to anger, snappish, sarcastic, jaded to the extreme, prone to brood of course, emotionally closed off about WHY he's so broody, desperate to find something or someone to hold onto, and possibly the more ruthless of his incarnations.

The other side is Mr. Manic Scientist of Hugs. Mr. Manic Scientist of Hugs loves deeply and passionately, and the things he loves include people, Earth, human potential, tinkering, and Rose Tyler. He's playful, perky, and soft-hearted when it comes to anything huggable, like little children and Rose. He also enjoys good banter with a bright mind.

The only other doctor I've seen is Eight from the tv movie, but from comparing him to Nine it seems like Nine has some of the traits of Eight, and if Eight was the one who "died" fighting the time war and Nine is the regenerated result of that war, then it makes sense to see what elements of Eight became parts of Nine. Eight was very much of the Mr. Manic Scientist of Hugs variety, and his darkness never went darker than introspection on the meaning of life and death, and urgency in saving the world. But it's easy to see how that Mr. Manic Scientist of Hugs-ness could have been warped into desperate jadedness by a war.

So what aspects of those will show up in Ten? Will he be half Mr. Broody Ears and half something else? Or will the broody darkness end with this rather tragic incarnation of the Doctor, and the next Doctor will be more along the lines of Mr. Manic Scientist of Hugs mixed with something else.

Good question. Nine is my only experience of Doctor Who, so I've never had to go through a regeneration and to be perfectly honest, I'm really quite anxious about it taking place.

Like you said, Nine is very much Jekyll and Hyde in his personality. I think that perhaps Ten will have both aspects, but switch between them less dramatically. Nine is able to go from brooding to smiley in a nanosecond, flat. I don't see that transferring over to Ten since it seems to be a very Nine-ish trait (if what I see on Doctor Who Confidential is true). It seems as though Nine is our transition Doctor - the Doctor with the most baggage and inner turmoil. But, I have nothing aside from a few clips of earlier Doctors to base this assumption on, so I may very well be wrong.

This regeneration anxiety is going to kill me, it will.

It's gonna kill me too. I kinda hope Rose doesn't come back next season, because I can't imagine Rose paired with a different Doctor.

It's pretty sucky to know that you have a wonderful OTP but your OTP comes with an automatic end date. And with it being regeneration, not death, you can't even play around as much with AUs where they're reborn together or he doesn't really die or he somehow gets turned back into his old self. It's so...inescapable.

I'm sorry, it's driving me crazy... What does "OTP" mean?! X_x

One True Pairing. Like... Vash/Meryl is my Trigun OTP. The pairing I like to watch, write fic for, talk about, etc.

WOW. That wasn't an "I'm going to rescue my friend/subordinate/sidekick" speech. That was an "I love you, wait for me, believe in me, I'm coming for you," speech.

Amen to that! I loved reading your review - thank you, lots. You made me do the dance of shippy joy ten times over. :)

Your comment reminded me that I was gonna go back and read the second half of your post! I'd read earlier the part where you ate at the restaurant where the group was. Cool! I had a moment where I was watching a 98* music video and realized I'd actually stood at the same spot at the top of the pyramid they were currently serenading from. I love those moments, though I'm not really a 98* fan.

You made me do the dance of shippy joy ten times over.

The episode made me do the bounce in the chair of shipper joy. And now I have to go read your review! I love that so many people whose names I knew from Jossverse fandoms have discovered Dr. Who! So fun! (Though it's a new experience for once to be on the side of the pond that does the downloading, not the tv watching) And this is the first tv ship I've fell hard for since BTVS and Farscape, so it's fun to get back to that feeling.

Dude, he's so in love with her! And she's so obviously in love with him too. I've rewatched the episode twice now and that last scene about 15 times.

Hee! It's such a novelty to actually have something broadcast straight to me and not be there half the night trying to crank up dial-up to have some vague, blurry idea of what everyone else is going on about! :)

Plus, yes! It's *so* lovely to have a ship and a show in common with so many of my old Buffy friends.

And oh, the way they looked at each other in that final scene. It was like the eye version of handporn. Eyesex! Ew. That sounds kind of unpleasant. ;) Hee.

"Eyesex" does sound kind of unpleasant. I'm rather fond of the term "eyefucking" though, especially pertaining to Kabuto/Kakashi of Naruto fandom, which is the only slash pairing I like, and I like them specifically because every time they're on screen together they'retotallyeyefucking.

And oh, the way they looked at each other in that final scene.

His expression. Her hopeful/relieved/loving expression in return. His VOICE when he said her name!

It kinda reminds me of that scene in World War III when he says "I could save the world but lose you." This scene was like the opposite of that. Instead of being afraid, he's determined.

I agree with everything you've said.

I wish everyone I knew would say that to me. Even if it was only for a day. I can picture it now-- going around and everyone all day would always say "I agree with everything you've said." That'd be a good day. And funny, too, once my dirty fannish joke-tendencies took over. ;)

lol, that would be an amazing day
