so lame and meta of me, but I'll post it anyway...
More about my strange new fascination with Draco/Hermione fanfics of Harry Potter ficdom. I realize now that I’m totally projecting my spuffy fannishness onto this pairing... but it’s so easy! I can’t help it.
For example, did you guys know that you can trace the history of Spike from BTVS by reading the right D/Hm fics? I swear:
-Season 4 Spike, who is self-obsessed, pretty, petty, snarky, cute, and mischievously amoral can be found reincarnated as Draco in the fic Draco Malfoy the Amazing Bouncing...Rat
-Spike of BTVS season 5, who is flirty, dangerous, more than an little manipulative, hasty, sincere, ridiculed, and crushing on someone he shouldn’t, can be found reincarnated as Draco in Must Be Hell Freezing Over.
-If you want to seeSpike Draco with the lurid sex, destructive secrets, and dark yet touching lust-based-but-maybe-more-later-relationship of season 6, read Adamo Fidelitas.
-And now I’m reading this lovingly angsty fic that hasSpike Draco found lost and near catatonic in a dirty alley in Cairo (with longer hair!), reeling internally from a traumatic experience involving flashy lights and torture that led to his current state of depression/rage/listlessness with masochistic tendencies, great misunderstood guilt, and a profound desire for redemption...which of course leaves the Scooby Gang Potter & Co. unsure of how to behave around him and causes the pure and good Buffy Hermione to want to comfort and heal him and discover the secret of his changed ways. That’s called Buffy Season 7 Sympathy for the Slytherin.
See what I’m talking about? It’s mad coincidence, I say.
I even found one on ff.net where Draco dies a noble death (in the dark, underground) while telling Hermione to forget about him and escape... but that one kind of sucked, and I’m not linking it.
P.S. What does it say about my life that I not only live my romance vicariously through fanfic, but now also live my fanfic romance vicariously through other fanfic?
P.S.S. Just for note, all these fics are super super cool and well-written and all that normal envious jazz that oft colors my posts to a nice tint of green. This is a rec post, officially.

(Anonymous) 2003-06-10 03:03 am (UTC)(link)LOL -- tad bit scary, I agree ;o).
I haven't gotten as far with my Potter-mania yet as to read fanfiction on the books, but now that Buffy's over.... :o(
I just got really happy when I read your post (better admit now that I do stalk you every now and then ;o) ). It wasn't until I saw HP2 in the movies that the obvious Spike-MiniMe thing with Draco struck me. Now I am totally fan of him, and an obsessive Draco/Hermione shipper -- whenever anyone wants to talk to me about it :oP
However, it does seem like maybe there's slight inspiration from the Buffyverse in those fics you recced, doesn't it...? But like you, I don't think I want to complain! :o)
Anyway. I HATE this anonymous-thing :oS Just because I don't have an LJ! -- I'll link you to my blog, so I don't feel like a total creep ;o)

Re:
It's a new thing for me. Like... only-a-week-old thing. And right now, only this one ship.
I don't think I'll write it, because frankly the magic-things vocabulary I'd need to sound anything like canon terrifies me.

:g: Didn't strike me until someone pointed me to the Bouncing Rat fanfic.

Oooooo! Got any recs? I inhale fanfic at a rate you wouldn't believe.

Really, the similarities are only surface. But I like to have fun with my fandoms and find connections like this. ;)

When was it you posted first on D/HM fic? A week or two ago?
I now have 57 D/HM fics/sites bookmarked. For this I blame you.
Re:
Oh my god, 57?! I have about 4. Tell me the good ones... please! And give me stuff to read...
For this I blame you.
I accept this great responsibility.

I did, however, once write a totally insane HG/DM fic (http://www.fanfiction.net/read.php?storyid=881700) at my sisters' insistance. Warning: It's WAY over the top.
Re:
Oh no. Ugh. The age thing just freaks me out right there.
Mostly because in canon Draco has not a single redeeming quality.
Oh, I know. Part of why I'm enjoying these is that they can be very well written but stretch canon a lot, and that's ok with me. Since HP is not a fandom I'm particularly devoted to in the first place, I don't mind canon butchery, as long as its enjoyable butchery.
In that way, it's like reading Legolas fiction.
Re:
(and we're both splitting hairs here)
Yeah, but it's not a child-to-adult difference. That's what ooks me. of course, I assume a significant amount of the people who write that ship have any smut be done when she's at least her last year or older. But I'm hypothesizng, cause I haven't read any of that ship.
It's one of those things that doesn't bother me in fiction that would really skeeve me in real life.
It bothers me in both, to an extent. I think once you're past a certain age (las says 18), age difference between relationships is unimportant. However, I do believe there should be a line. I know that there are people in relationships out there who are commited to someone younger than them, and have decided to wait for them to grow up completely, and I think that's fine, even sweet if you are willing to wait... as long as you're legal about how you treat the relationship.
I sort of look at it in fanfic the same way. I mean, I could get into the Dawn/Xander relationship, as long as it happened in future. I wouldn't like it happnening in season 7. I can get inot Wolverine/Rogue fanfic, as long as it's set in future when she's over 18. I didn't like the whole Buffy/Angel age difference in the early seasons, but Buffy is so far from a real girl that I can accept the differences.
Re: (and we're both splitting hairs here)
*shrugs* One of my very favorite HG/SS fics (which is also HG/DM) happens in Hermione's sixth year. And it's just so brilliantly written and instersting that I never even thought about it being, you know, illegal in real life.
Of course, I think another part of the reason I like Hermione/Snape better than Hermione/Draco is that Alan Rickman brings so much to the character of Snape that it's just more *fun* to read about him than Draco who's basically a cardboard cutout if he's written anywhere near canon.
I guess for me it's definitely a matter of projecting - I identify with Hermione and I'd rather be entangled with Snape than with Draco. I see fic as a means of escape and sometimes I find it fun to read stuff that's way outside my own morality. Hell, I've read and enjoyed incest fics, which I obviously don't approve of in real life.
Re: (and we're both splitting hairs here)
I love Alan Rickman, but I do think he looks kinda old with the make-up and costuming they give him, so maybe that's why it's not working in my head. And now as I type I'm suddenly getting pictures of the Hermione actress and Alan rickman and my head's going "...Eww."

That's the thing that I've always found weird about my love for Spuffy... I like Buffy as a character but I've never projected myself into her shoes. I'm more Willowish, in truth, though I've never really projected into Willow much either, on the fact that sometimes the things she did really bugged me.
I don't think I really project into Hermione... I was a lot like girls like her up until maybe sixth grade, but now I'm not much like her character at all. I've found I don't really project much. I love escaping into stories, and I get really really emotionally invested into their storylines, but I rarely imagine myself as the characters. And a lot of the characters I end up preferring (like Spike) are really not like me at all.

Yeah, much fantasy escapism is like that. I've read a lot of dark fics that I loved, filled with things I enjoyed reading about but would never do.

I've tried very hard to resist the pull of HP fic, but now that BtVS is over, it may be time to return to obsessing over HP and its various 'ships.

Welcome. :) You got any? For this pairing.

This isn't a real "ship" ship for me, in fandom terms. This is a fandom fling. A dirty little liason in a back alley of Hogsmede, that I will destructivley throw myself into and probably burn out on in a few months, or until I dump it for Angel and Spike's return. But it'll be a fun go.
