Gungrave 1-2, fansub

I'm finally watching Gungrave. Because I have all the subs and it's playing on a cable channel in dubbed. So I'm pausing my Monster viewing to injest some of this instead.

Episode 1: Blegh.

Episode 2: Looking better!

Brandon is like, I dunno, a hot young someone. He's workin' the long hair thing.
Harry is like a grown up and tough-looking Shinji from Neon Genesis Evangelion. What Shinji would look like physically if he grew up, filled out, and added pounds of muscle.
The bartender has Spike Spiegel hair and I'd swear the young kid is the same baseball-loving one that worked with Spike's ship-building mentor in that Bebop episode with the space shuttle.

Edit 1: watching the rooftop fistfight now. At first I thought Harry was cuter but damn Brandon's sleeveless vest get-up is hot. Especially when he's jumping around hitting things. What was it Buffy said in that one BtVS episode? "Look at his arms. Those are nice arms to have."

My first impression of the characters:

Harry: Hi. I'm the brains of this outfit and I'm going to talk my way into power, fast. I'm charming and fun to be around and I will hack your balls off in a second.

Brandon: Grr. Arggh. ::makes hand gestures that indicate 'Hi. I'm Brandon, and I'm a walking sex popsicle. I don't talk much but I'm very, very hot. Do I make you horny baby?'::

Rashaka: ::gestures:: 'Yes you dooooooooo. Let's find us a haystack and get to business.'

The first episode makes a hell of a lot more sense after you get through most of the season. When it jumped back to present day - which is when that was - I thought it came off much less cheesy. But that was me.

I'm hopeful for that; I've had people tell me as much before. I already like episode 2 better, and I'm only partway through.

It follows their younger days for the next ... 16 episodes? Most of the episodes from 16 on had me in tears at some point. So effing sad. Here's hoping you like it, because I love that show.

Not sure if you have a Suncoast or Media Play by you but I was told that the last dvd is out early and they have a sale right now there on it for $20. I'm going to call Suncoast in the morning to see if they do have it and if they still have it on sale.

I'd read that over at the comm. I should stop by Best Buy sometime this weekend and see if they have it. I have to watch the last two episodes again. Because, you know, I need more depression in my life ...

If it is handy tomorrow, I think I will torture myself by either going straight to the last two eps or just watch the very near ending just cause I want to hear what they have to say in english, and then of course no doubt end up crying even more than when I watched the fansubs.

*grumbles* Stupid ending *kicks it in the nuts*

I would bitch to y'all about mood spoilers if it weren't for the fact that the entire first episode and the entire series plot summary kind of gives off the mood spoiler of "THIS IS GOING TO END BADLY."

I'm glad to know the end is worth getting to.

Oh I know. Its like the first eps you see this living dead guy, you know he gets killed by his best friend but I guess its just the idea of everything building up that makes it what it is.

I'm glad to know the end is worth getting to.

Indeed it is!!!

Harry was kinda nice looking in the early days but right before he became head honcho, the looks department went downhill. Brandon was hot till he cut his hair, then I kinda went blah with him. The glasses and short hair just wasn't him and it just wasn't the looks, the whole personality changed.

When I first saw Jolice, the first thing that ran through my head was a near relative of Spike too. And I never thought about that regarding Kenny till you mentioned it.

Also the thing with Brandon that always made me wonder, was there something special about him that ppl feared? During that rooftop fight, right before he punched that guy, the guy took one look in Brandon's eyes and just freaked, as if Brandon was a monster. I think later on even Bunji noticed that there was something "special" about Brandon but even we don't know what.

'Hi. I'm Brandon, and I'm a walking sex popsicle. I don't talk much but I'm very, very hot. Do I make you horny baby?'::

*snerks* Oh god yes!

I made some Gungrave South Park characters if you want to check them out here (http://www.livejournal.com/community/gun_grave/56895.html#cutid1) but don't scroll any farther than Bunji's pic cause below that is a spoiler if you don't want to see it.

I think I like Brandon's hair at exactly the length it is right now. Not as long as I've seen picks of later, just sort of straight and shaggy-cut to around his chin and ears.

Actually, it's weird but facially Brandon reminds me a LOT of Akito Sohma. Especially in profile. Which is really weird.

I just finished the second episode. They're walking home laughing about how they survived on sheer audacity with nothing worse than a beating and some hurt pride... and their friend SofterSpike is staring at the scary guy who just broke into their place... and they're laughing, and SofterSpike is staring and my head starts screaming "He's gonna die he's gonna die he's gonna die!"... and my mom calls me out for a 20 minute conversation and some printed out email jokes.

I come back, but somehow the emotional impact is lessened, you know?

The credits are damn snazzy. Both of them.

*laughs* Yeah, in a way he does.

Thats understandable. Thats why you have to go back and re-watch it again in order to feel it *lol*

Just finished that episode too. ;_; Luckily, I wasn't pulled out right in the middle of it, so I am feeling pretty strongly right now...

The guy had "PEACE" on his apron and everything! How do you that to the harmless, apron-wearing, peace-toting, clearly terrified homemaker? How is that emotionally gratifying in any way??

[identity profile] rashaka.livejournal.com 2008-05-23 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. This show gets pretty dark, along those lines.

[identity profile] rasielle.livejournal.com 2008-05-23 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
So not even the homemaker is safe. I'm really looking forward to the rest of this, though - when was the last time I watched something this dark? Baccano was gorey but flippant, Haibane Renmei was about depression but without violence; neither of them directly dealt with any dark, emotionally warping combination of the two.

Thanks for the recommendation! I'm bracing myself here for some quality heartache.
