A list of prompts.

If I can think of some way to make this an official multi-fandom challenge somewhere, I'd like to. But I'm not sure how one gets something like that started.

Do you think people would be interested in a community for it? I know there's lots of prompts lists out there, but a lot of people must have done the big ones by now and might be looking for new prompts...

I'm on a sentence-comm high right now, so... I'd be willing to take a fandom and write things for them all.

Heck, I'd like to do something with my original character and these themes... may I?

Sure! Just mention this post, if you will. I think I might want to make a comm, except I'm not sure if anyone will go to my prompt list when faced with however many others are out there. I'd need a really catchy name...

[identity profile] flamingly-fey.livejournal.com 2006-06-27 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
I'll link back to it!

As to a name, I suggest something drawing on the fact that sixty-four is eight squared. Numbers are "catchy," right?

[identity profile] rashaka.livejournal.com 2006-06-27 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
I was thinking about the 8 squared thing (one of the reasons I picked the number), but I was stuck on the fact that it's not separated into 8 categories, it's just a list of 64. Do you think "64dollar_prompt" is catchy?

[identity profile] flamingly-fey.livejournal.com 2006-06-27 07:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, actually. (I'd thought you'd posted it as a link to something similar, and so was wracking my brains to try and figure out an alternate one—I'm stupid in that way.) It's good, and memorable.

Can I contribute a theme set once everything is go?

No link, just testing to see how it looks as in LJ code.

Definitely. I'll reply here to your comment if I make something official. Also, the list is now frozen, since people have expressed interest-- I'm not going to edit or add to it at this point, so use it as you will.

[identity profile] flamingly-fey.livejournal.com 2006-06-27 07:09 am (UTC)(link)
It looks good.

Thank you! I'll be writing in anticipation—for all three of my current fandoms. (Shaman King, Avatar, and D. Gray-Man, that is.)

[identity profile] donna-c-punk.livejournal.com 2006-06-27 06:41 am (UTC)(link)
My Tegan comm's looking for prompts. I might suggest a few to them when we organize our first fic-a-thon. I believe we'd settled on once a month.

[identity profile] rashaka.livejournal.com 2006-06-27 06:50 am (UTC)(link)
Cool.

Any ideas for a generic prompt comm name or concept? Or any idea how to spread a list of prompts around to different groups?

[identity profile] donna-c-punk.livejournal.com 2006-06-27 06:56 am (UTC)(link)
I'll ask around. Are you looking for a specific fandom or do you just want to do a multi-fandom prompt?

[livejournal.com profile] dragonsinger, who issues the "Variations on a Plot Theme" challenge every year (which I wrote "Love Is A Verb" for), states it's multi-fandom and links back to her LJ post on it at every fic comm, etc. she knows of. It generates a lot of buzz and interest.

[identity profile] rashaka.livejournal.com 2006-06-27 06:59 am (UTC)(link)
Multi-fandom prompt.

That sounds cool, and I wouldn't be adverse to posting to every fic comm I can think of. But I was thinking maybe making a community for it (like 30_kisses) would be easier and less confusing. But I don't really have a gimmick or an angle to make it exciting or thrilling-- I just have a list of prompts I want to share with everyone.

[identity profile] donna-c-punk.livejournal.com 2006-06-27 07:08 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe just something insanely simple, like multi_prompts? Given it would be multi-fandom, you'd have a huge amount of interest across the board. I'd pimp it out to my writer friends, definitely. I know they'd join.

I like multi_prompting or multi_prompts. And 64_promptings is general enough, too.

[identity profile] donna-c-punk.livejournal.com 2006-06-27 07:27 am (UTC)(link)
I wanted to use a lot of tangible things, very active words, and throw in some song lyrics that I love which make me think twisty things.

Or 64random_prompts?

is "8squared_prompt" too confusing?

or....

I get it, but we're talking about LJ at large. NTB. None Too Bright. :)

These are all good suggestions, tho.

[identity profile] rashaka.livejournal.com 2006-06-27 07:42 am (UTC)(link)
we're talking about LJ at large. NTB.

New acronym.

I agree.

I'm thinking I'll just think of a bunch tonight and tomorrow, and then tomorrow night make a poll or something. Let LJers (or my flist) speak for itself.

[identity profile] donna-c-punk.livejournal.com 2006-06-27 07:54 am (UTC)(link)
Polls are always useful. I employ them quite a bit myself.

My brain's not wholly on the issue, tho. I'm compiling mini-fanmixes for characters. I've finally finished Raito's and now I need one more to round out Kimbley's.

I could say "64_dirtyprompts" and let people wonder "Why is Emily Dickinson's poem a dirty prompt?"

[identity profile] donna-c-punk.livejournal.com 2006-06-27 07:52 am (UTC)(link)
"Why is Emily Dickinson's poem a dirty prompt?"

They wouldn't be? Oh wait. She's the one who wrote about death all the time, right? Still, under the right circumstances, it could be dirty.
ext_10182: Anzo-Berrega Desert (Default)

[identity profile] rashaka.livejournal.com 2006-06-27 08:03 am (UTC)(link)
I actually haven't read a whole bunch of her poems, but I've never heard her described that way. I think "the one who wrote about death all the time" was Sylvia Plath, at least when talking about famous female American poets.

Emily Dickinson did "Hope is the thing with feathers" (prompt #42), and "There is no frigate like a book".

[identity profile] donna-c-punk.livejournal.com 2006-06-27 08:07 am (UTC)(link)
I had a book of Dickinson's poems, and maybe it's just the way I interpreted them, but they all seemed to be about death. Then again, I'm the one who's been convinced for the past ten years everything Robert Frost ever wrote is about death. I seem to have a thing about death.
ext_10182: Anzo-Berrega Desert (Default)

[identity profile] rashaka.livejournal.com 2006-06-27 08:09 am (UTC)(link)
A book is way more than I've read of her, so you may be totally right.

What little I've read about Frost has struck me as definite dark undertones.

[identity profile] rika-matsuki.livejournal.com 2006-07-09 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
yeah she does. my mom teaches her poems in her class so I get to hear about her stuff every year.

[identity profile] muffytaj.livejournal.com 2006-06-27 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
What fandom would it be for, or just general? Some of those look really interesting.
ext_10182: Anzo-Berrega Desert (Default)

[identity profile] rashaka.livejournal.com 2006-06-27 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
You know, it was sort of written for Avatar fandom in my head (since that's my main fandom right now), but I deliberately wanted to make it very open and useable for muliple fandoms, not just one.

[identity profile] loves-bitch.livejournal.com 2006-06-27 07:03 am (UTC)(link)
Oooh if you do this multi-fandom wise let me know because I already have a few ideas floating in my head for "We all float on" and "Half-life".
ext_10182: Anzo-Berrega Desert (Default)

[identity profile] rashaka.livejournal.com 2006-06-27 07:05 am (UTC)(link)
The idea is growing in its appeal. I thought them up with a multi-fandom intention. Do you think people would be interested in a community for it? I know there's lots of prompts lists out there, but a lot of people must have done the big ones by now and might be looking for new prompts...

[identity profile] loves-bitch.livejournal.com 2006-06-27 07:13 am (UTC)(link)
I know alot of the prompts I have seen I read but don't take part in because they are always the same things over and over again. But you seem to have some original things on there. Like right now "hope is a thing with feathers" has seemed to decide that it wants to be Fullmetal based for me, while "Half-life is screaming to be Spaced. So yeah, I think there will be a bit of an appeal to it.
ext_10182: Anzo-Berrega Desert (Default)

[identity profile] rashaka.livejournal.com 2006-06-27 07:16 am (UTC)(link)
I also noticed that a lot of prompt lists repeat the same stuff, and a lot of it is abstract stuff, very esoteric(?) and sometimes very emotion-based. I wanted to use a lot of tangible things, very active words, and throw in some song lyrics that I love which make me think twisty things. (or in the case of "hope is a thing with feathers", it's a poem line.)

Of course not. My love for you is like a lovely river of loving love!

[identity profile] jakia.livejournal.com 2006-06-27 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Then why must you come up with even more prompts? You know I can't resist them. They are like shinies to my dark, dreary, lifeless soul. >.

[identity profile] jakia.livejournal.com 2006-06-27 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)
And I still love you too. :) :sighs: Now to add about sixty more to my to-do list...
