Colstone: Day 1

Well, I'm glad I'm not going to be working at the same store I'm training at; the manager's a dick. Unfortunately said dick will be judging some of my probation period.
Didn't get to do any ice cream today. I spent two hours watching videos, answering questions, and helped with some dishes a bit at the end. Then they let me go two hours early, because the manager didn't want to train me on the food tonight.
My wage is 7 dollars an hour, which is decent. When my probation time is over and I start collecting tips, the average will be about 9 dollars, which is good.
I found the training videos interesting. I had to watch 3 in a row, which amounted to a little over an hour and a half-- a full length feature film. I doubt I'll remember all the stuff about the cash register without even looking at one, but the rest shouldn't be hard. The way they do stuff in the food industry really intrigues me though. They're all about semantics, you know? You may say "this", you absolutely never say "that."

After watching the videos, I have to say that if I ever owned anything that sold food, I tell my employees "Be polite, be helpful, smile, and if there's a problem shut up immediately and get the manager. You can tell them to try to fuck a duck, if you think you can do it and still get them to leave a happy customer with feels of only contentment and satisfaction." That would be it on that subject.

I dont' remember if I met a Jeff or not; I've seen a bunch of people in the last few days. But yep, now I'm in the ice cream business. Tina seemed pretty nice though. The other trainees were nice too; not jaded yet.

Wait, wait, back up. You can't say "that"?

What something is over there? Must you still say "this table", or "this poster"? Can you not say, "That'll be $4.16"? If someone says something nice, can you not say, "That's so nice to hear, hope we'll see you again"?

What if they say "that" first? What if they say, "Is it this one or that one," do you have to say "that one" when referring to "this one"? What do you do when they don't get it?

*is befuddled*

I meant, "this one" referring to "that one." See? I tripped myself up.

*hangs head in shame*

*Is. A. Moron.*

An overliteral moron. But still, I challenge you to always say "this" and never "that." It'll be fun!

Aww. Thanks. And I suppose being overliteral is better than being illiterate.

You know, Bush's facial expressions have skeeved me for awhile, but I've never before taken the time to relish my greater photogenicness, as well as my ethical and intellectual superiority. ;) And I am not photogenic in the slightest, but I don't think I could look so dumb as he regularly does. Well, maybe if I put on a flight suit and stuffed a sock in my crotch. Hmm. Wonder if BushOrChimp.com is still there. It is! Huzzah.

Besides, it was late, and and I'm tired, and and that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Ok, I did. Not very usefully, but I did. Believe it or not, my gut response is, "Thank goodness I'm never going to get married so I don't have to deal with djs and planning and freakin' centerpieces, and all those relatives and pictures."

My thought now is, my 2nd brother may get married in the foreseeable future, he and his girlfriend seem pretty serious. I hope she doesn't ask me to be a bridesmaid.

I think I'll have a smaller wedding, personally. But I do plan to get married, because I really want to have a family, and a man to stick around for it. But I cheer you on to your life without the ball & chain. Be a mankiller, or a spinster, but be free!

I think being on the peripheral of weddings can be fun. You get to go and experience the finished product, without the stress of putting it together.

Thanks, doll! And you know, if I ever did get married, it'd probably be in a ceremony like my dad and his fiancee are going to have: they're going to Hawaii to get married, and no one's invited. ;) Then they're going to host at least 2 parties later, one for just us kids (and our spouses), and then a larger one for all their friends. This makes sense to me, they get to have their wedding which is really about them, but then celebrate it with the people who care about them, and on a different day, so it makes the whole less stressful.

Of course, this may work better since they're older with grown children.

I've only ever been to two weddings, and there was fun to be had, but the concept of bridesmaids' dresses frightens me. ;)

one's invited.

That's called eloping, as far as I understand. Always a tempting alternative.

Re: HA! I'll spell it out!-2

[identity profile] thisficklemob.livejournal.com 2003-09-20 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it? I mean, they've been telling everyone they're getting married for months. I thought eloping was supposed to be secret and spontaneous.

Quoth dictionary.com:

1. To run away with a lover, especially with the intention of getting married.

2. To run away; abscond.

I like the word abscond.

But whatever it's called, it seems like a much less stressful way to go about it, and that way you only have to deal with what the two of you want, not everybody else's preferences and expectations. Of course, whether you can get away with it depends a lot on your family's views on being shut out. When my dad told me I wasn't invited, I asked if anybody was. He said no. I said that was alright then. :)

I like the word abscond.

Me too. You might be right-- I think you could call that eloping and it would be acceptable in conversation, but there is a connotation of secrecy of forbiddenness to eloping, that's true.
