I am biting my cheek waiting for the new Naruto episode. That teaser of the opening that
riddering posted is driving me crazy.
We wants it, we wants it precious! My precious, yes we wants it... we wants it now not later...

You need to read the manga if you haven't already. It's so moving.

I hear people say in any fandom that online translations are more accurate than purchased ones. But I don't know if I buy that-- sometimes I think some fans would just like to think they, like a happy fantasy maybe to justify piracy or something or simply because it makes them feel more cool and underground or something. I imagine accuracy, being hard to measure regardless, varies from title to title because you have different people working on different series. And I think manga now is probably more accurate than manga from 4 years ago-- there's a greater demand, and thus more customer feedback to hold the translators to task (for instance, I've noticed there's a lot more accuracy in culture-sensitive translations than there used to be.) A fansubber/ online translator doesn't risky losing their job if he or she makes a poor translation; there only stake in it is a personal one. Which is good because it means that they are doing it because they love it-- but it also means they don't answer to anyone about their accuracy, not so much that it means anything anyway.
So, I ask, why do you feel that the Naruto in particular translations online are more or less accurate than those put out by publishing companies? What knowledge do you base your comparison on?

But, to each her own. :) Depending on how things go I might end up reading the fan translations anyway, if I get dissatisfied with waiting for new eps.

*It never ceases to amaze me how relevant and important the backstories for twelve year olds are in Naruto.

No kidding. But then again, if you are a trained lethal ninja of *journeyman* status at age 6 like Kakashi was, I get the feeling age passes rather fast for these folks.
