Samurai Champloo catch-up post 1

22

I love how, when when Fuu and Mugen start to fall down a deep hole, Mugen makes sure to grab the uninvolved Jin and drag him down too, just because.

Uhg. Monologues. I hate the monologues in this show. Clearly Mugen does too.

Heeeeheee. Wasabi. Heeeeeeee.

So... zombies don't eat brains to survive, they eat ...wasabi?

Heeeheee.

Although, this is kind of lame placement for this episode. I want some emotional after-effects from episodes 20 and 21.

Old Japanese man: "There's an official notice to tell us to drive off foreign ships..."
American commander: "???---Fuck them!"
Rashaka: **giggle**

The Engrish. The Engrish! ::helples giggles:: They should air this episode with subtitles. Seriously.

I need subtitles for some of the things the Americans are saying. Especially the single-word utterances that go by too fast.

Dude, I totally need an icon that says "Ninja baseball." One that can convey the amount of teeth-gritting disgust the voice actor managed to insert into the word "ninja." Heeeheehehe.

Old Japanese man: "Listen, overcome my death and go on..."
Rashaka: *laughing way too much*

Whoever said they needed a Mugen icon that says "There's no crying in baseball!" was soooooooo right.

I loved episode 23. The Engrish speaking Americans were insanely funny (even though I couldn't always understand them either). As was most of the team dying (that sentence sounds evil taken out of context. Like I'm some sort of morbid crazy person, "Everyone died! HEE!").

I loved how they had the bodies laid out funereal style, with incence burning and offerings and everything. Right in front of the player's bench. And how Jin was one of them and no one was making a big deal about it-- though his last words were as cheesy/melodramatic as the old man's. (but of course, this is no big deal, like everyone dying in that one whacked-out episode of Cowboy Bebop).

Yes! I think I need to rewatch that episode because I was laughing so hard I'm pretty sure I missed some of what was said. I don't even remember what Jin's last words were.

"Toys in the Attic," you mean? Hee! I loved that episode. Alien parody, yay!

Yep, toys in the attic! Probably my favorite episode after the Cowboy Andy episode. I liked the comedy CB episodes best, ultimately.

Alien parody, yay!

And 2001 parody. If you watch it again, pay attention to the end. As the fridge is ejected out of the ship, it floats off, a white object spinning into the distant stars... to the music of The Blue Danube. Just like the white spaceships spinning to The Blue Danube in the beginning of 2001: Space Oddessey. That just cracked me up.

Me too! Toys in the Attic is my favorite episode, I think. I used to watch it whenever I needed a good laugh, because it never fails to amuse me.

And 2001 parody.

Yes! I noticed the 2001 parody, too. Actually, my mom noticed it first, since CB was one of the anime she watched with me. She was like "Hey, they're parodying 2001." And I realized she was right and that's why the scene looked familiar to me. Heh. CB is awesome.

According to what I've read on boards, #22 was originally supposed to air around Halloween, but got pushed back to Valentine's Day because of the long delay.

Champloo wins at Engrish! and baseball! and life!

I will see what screencaps I can make for "There's no crying in baseball!" icon.

Champloo definitely wins at Engrish.

That makes sense if it was a halloween episode.

I watched episode 22 early one morning after having slept not at all so my entire reaction was: O_O I'd probably get more out of a repeat viewing.

But episode 23 = love. I didn't think this show could out-do episode 15 but they did! Messing with history, making fun of America (& American accents), *and* dark, dark humor all wrapped up in one anime package makes me deliriously happy.

Old Japanese man: "There's an official notice to tell us to drive off foreign ships..."
American commander: "???---Fuck them!"
Rashaka: **giggle**

America's foreign policy in 15 seconds!

BTW, did you watch the Anime Forever version? Because that one did have subtitles of the English and an explanation of who the two main Americans were--which added greatly to my amusement.

Ninja baseball and no-crying-in-baseball BOTH need to be made into icons.

That was my reaction too. Some giggling over the wasabi thing, but mostly or o_O

America's foreign policy in 15 seconds!

Haha. I did feel that was the truest moment of portraying the Americans in this episode.

I watched the SS version. I'd be interested in seeing the other version, if you have it.

I was sending it to another friend already so here ep 23 is all speedy-like:

If I thought I could do it any kind of justice, I'd do an icon dedicated to Mugen's pitching with the theme "Wild Thing." (this assumes you've seen Major League.)

SC 23 is howlingly funny. I do wonder whether the Engrish is voiced or whether it's a fake voice like the one that gives the weather. Either way, the "Fuck them!" line puts me on the floor every time.

...well, enjoy the funny, because now you're in for a nailbiter.

I have seen major league. This reminded me of it, in the spirit of spoofing baseball.

I do wonder whether the Engrish is voiced or whether it's a fake voice like the one that gives the weather.

I think it was voiced, but almost like they didn't care about making it English instead of Engrish. Because most of it was accented, and some went by me totally, even after repeated listenings. It makes no sense that they couldn't have had fluent English speakers if they wanted to-- I imagine the Engrish was just funnier.

Either way, the "Fuck them!" line puts me on the floor every time.

The pity is that I know they won't air the f-word on Adult Swim. Which just takes all the greatest out of the line. Maybe they'll dub with with
"Fuck them!" and then bleep it out so it sounds like "Fu-- them!", so at least people will know what it was supposed to be.
