Catching up on some episodes of Lost. Unfortunatley grabbing 2x10-2x13 yesterday meant hitting my 1gig max on sendspace, so
donna_c_punk, I hope your Laureena McKennit links don't expire!
Anyway, I'm totally unspoiled for this (well, one potential future spoiler, unconfirmed), and it's been months since I saw episode 2x9.
My overall impression of this batch of eps? I really, really want to see an Echo vid to "Gangsta's Paradise". Yes, it's a tired old song, but *damn* it would be good. Scripture and all.
Anyway,
I was never a big Charlie fan (rather neutral on his character, though the actor's pretty cute), but even so I'm disappointed with what he did to Sun. And as far as writing goes, I'm frustrated with his unexplained sleepwalking and delusions. WTF? Why is he suddenly crazy? --- Whatshisname was on the Daily Show the other day and promised that the show is actually going somewhere with these mysteries, so I'll have to trust him. As it is, I fear the XF mythology syndrome might be in this show's future.
Random, but please don't let Michael be dead! I don't really care about Walt, but I  Michael.
Damn, Claire is pretty. She was really pretty in 2x12. Scared, but pretty.
Echo is interesting, as far as characters go. What a tragic story--- his brother was really an awesome, awesome person, and the backstory nicely explained why Echo looks vaguely dangerous and why he has the same eerie serenity as Locke. Speaking of which, I'm actually glad that all the islanders won't be looking solely to Locke anymore for their spiritual guidance. Locke's mostly stable, but it was only last season that he was as crazy as Charlie was with the visions of danger and erratic behavior.
Which brings me to Sawyer-- I'm tired of this "I want everyone to hate me" thing Kate keeps spouting. Is that really what's going on here? Cause that kind of self-centered pity-me crap just makes me what to hit Sawyer on the head with a stick. I mean, I get doing what he did to get the suns, for his own survival. I even get it as some kind of revenge. But a misguided attempt to make himself a bad guy because deep down he's afraid of being loved? Ptthhhbpt! There's levels of asshat behavior=inner woobiedom that I can take, and levels I can't take. If this is really a plotline intended to make us the audience feel sorry for Sawyer the way Kate clearly does, I'm not buying. That kind of self-centeredness doesn't make me sympathize with Sawyer, it makes me want to shun him and wipe him from my mind. Ignore his dramatics because all he's looking for is the reaction. It's immature, and dangerous, and frankly these people have a lot worse things they need to be dealing with right now.
Re: the Others. I'm glad it's a group, not just a few punks. I personally *love* the idea of an army. Go, train! The reality is that they'll come for the Evil Baby when the Evil Baby is old enough to walk on his own, and two years is plenty of time for the survivors to crank up their defenses.
Echo facing off with the Black Smoke was pretty cool. But I'm lost for a logical explanation for what that might be. Seemed pretty much along the "supernatural" lines.
Sawyer and Hurley listening to the radio station warmed my heart. And Bernard's a dentist! That will be useful, giving Jack another psuedo-doctor to help. Also, by now we're really stacking the varied jobs. What's the tally so far of useful people?
-doctor
-dentist
-cop
-amataeur botanist
-fisherman
-priest
-psychologist w/ 1 year of med school
-soldier/communications electrician
-science teacher Poor Arnst; you were good while you lasted.
-construction/builder (should this be struck out? Michael's not useful if he's on the other side of the island...)
-self-taught hunter/trapper/tracker
A different thought: can anyone explain to me why I despise Saywer, when usually the bad boy is the one I like in tv shows? Because seriously, I would hate Sawyer in real life. As a character he's interesting, but I still dislike him. I don't find him sexy or endearing or entertaining. Self-centered people are typically useful in their predictability, but that combination's spoiled in Sawyer, being as he is decidedly unpredictable. I dislike Sawyer, as a character and as a hypothetical person (this is different from characters that I know I'd hate if they were real people, but love as characters.)
Actually, I like Sayid and Echo more than Sawyer, which is weird because Sawyer's a lot less guilty and murderous than either of them.
