I meant more that (in that one scene) he didn't give much indication that he was at all bothered by the idea of leaving her behind.
You should try and see the last ten minutes of The Green Death, where Three leaves Jo behind. Five (and later Six) seem fairly upset at losing Tegan, too.
The emotional stuff was far, far less prominent in the old series just because both the show and TV have changed Look at Adric - he's only a kid, he dies because the Doctor can't save him, and there's barely any onscreen mourning for him. I'd rather believe that it just didn't happen onscreen because of the nature of the show than have to believe the Doctor (and Nyssa and Tegan) really didn't care much.
Someone mentioned above characters in the books and audios: they're far more recent and the Doctor is a lot more openly close to his companions there (as nos noted, he has sex with Benny!) I don't count them as canon but I do see them as a template for how the writing of the character has changed.
