"The Blind Bandit"

New OTP!

Okay, now that that's out of the way...

I liked Aang's entry level lesson, and how he was taller than all the other kids. For once Aang's taller than someone.

Katara intimidating those boys was awesome. And then she did it again. And again.

But nothing, nothing beats Sokka's whispered "Watertribe." and accompanying hand gesture. That was seriously the funniest Sokka moment in the entire series so far. And kudos to the voice actor for note-perfect delivery. I'll have to make an animated icon of that as soon as the torrent is out.

His fanboy reaction to the "Earth Rumble" was also amusing, though it pushed the edge of tiresome after multiple references. But I have so much distaste for pro wrestling that even mocking pro-wrestling irritates me after a while. Still, his reaction to the signature was humorous, and I did figure out that "The Boulder" was obviously supposed to be "The Rock."

The thing Momo did where he jumped into the bag and curled up? Our cat does that. She cannot resist THE BAG.

The animation for the fights this episode were pretty nice, especially Toph.

And now, speaking of the newcomer! Toph... is totally awesome. Not so much because of her Madd Skillz (though they were quite Madd), but for her evil little laugh and her general glee at fighting. I mean, I thought Katara liked fighting (and of course she does, as her beating up the boys proved yet again), but this girl lives and breathes for fighting. Her glee at combat was a bit of an Azula resonance, actually, but in a more sportsmanlike way, and less sadistic. The difference being that Toph likes combat whereas Azula likes inflicting pain.

Her interactions with Aang? Instant OTP. And not just because she's the newest kid; I don't ship convenience. If I did I'd've been an Aang/Meng shipper last season, which I'm really not at all. I actually think that she's going to be a challenge to him... she's a lot like Katara (good at fighting, smart, brave) but without the mothering aspect. I think Toph would react, well, badly if Aang wanted her to mother him the way Katara does. Honestly, Aang needs someone to compete with his own age.

I see many laughs and battles and thrills of puppy love in their future.

Then I see tragedy and death. After all, the swamp shows you those people whom you've loved... loved and lost.

Hm. Still, it's too bad my theory of it being Aang's daughter never panned out. I didn't expect it to, but it woulda been cool.

The clip with the two Earthbenders and the father at the end was nice exposition for future episodes. Poor Aang, everywhere he goes he steps on toes. At first I was like "Is that father stupid? He must realize she ran away." But then I remembered how they treated her throughout the episode, and a big "Duh" hovered over my head.

But anyway... new OTP!

And speaking of OTPs... I'm laughing an evil, evil laugh as a Z/K shipper. Because, dude, I can read the foreshadowing, yo. I've been watching tv as a critically-minded viewer for a while, and these things ain't a deep mystery. Tally, anyone?
-constant barrage of ying/yang themes, fire/water themes, and moon/sun themes. Hell, Zuko, the prince of fire, lived for years on the freaking water.
-themes about the Avatar bringing together opposing forces to a better, more peaceful whole
-historical legend about lovers from opposing kingdoms
-unresolved competition between Zuko and Katara...and we already know both Katara and Zuko are the sort to hold a grudge about an unresolved competition.
-the fortune teller's prediction (actually, this doesn't quite contradict the possibilities of Toph/Aang OTP, either, because if Toph is someone Aang loses, that explains the lack of love in his destiny)
-introduction of a new female character who's Aang's age and potentially more suited for him than Katara would be...now I must go over to [livejournal.com profile] avatar_fans and watch the Kataang ship slide right into a civil war. Ta!

Anyway, all that aside, no real ships are ever gonna happen on this show anyway. But at the moment, my television spidey sense is buzzing. I don't at all think it's giving them too much credit to read foreshadowing for what it is. The writers have already proved that they're not afraid of foreshadowing, and actually are quite fond of it.

Starving!Zuko! [livejournal.com profile] memlu, look, it's Starving!Zuko! See how his cheeks are all sunken in? REDEMPTION THROUGH HUNGER PAINS! I so called that two weeks ago.

Also: hair check! We are approaching "spikey" at last.

Still, I'm sure even a Redemption Through Hunger Pains Arc won't get as much fandom attention as two little words:

Chibi. Zuko.
