I don't know what at "woobie" is, but I can guess from the context. The one place I would disagree with you is that Sam does start out as a bit of an asshole (in the DVD extras, John Simm even says he's a kind of a prick). Maybe he's just tightly wound, but he's a very different guy in 1973 than he was in 2006. In fact, those shirts (which he does wear well, I agree) make a perfect metaphor for the difference between the buttoned-up shirt-and-tie Sam in 2006 and the open-collared looseness of Sam in 1973. But the rest of your insights were spot on, I thought.
And just wait until you watch the next two episodes, especially eight. If you love the show this much already, your head will probably explode (as mine did). I'm friending you just so I can read your reaction.
