I did notice he was a lot more uptight in the first ten minutes of episode 1, but he didn't really seem an asshole to me. Just uptight. But he was out of there so fast and into his 1973 behavior so fast that I don't think we really saw enough of him in 2006 to go into a lot of detail. And what we did see of him was colored very heavily by the stress of his case and Maya's situation.
Hm... a "woobie" is something used in fandoms for American-based shows, I suppose. Especially anything from Buffy the Vampire Slayer forward... but basically, a woobie is a guy who seems any of the following: hard, cold, emotionally stunted, jerkish, assholeish, inconsiderate, obnoxious, arrogant, or keeps people at a distance... but then if you watch he reveals a hidden vulnerability and/or inner goodness and suddenly you want to hug him.
Examples: Angel from BTVS/AtS, Logan Echolls from Veronica Mars (textbook example!), every single fanon incarnation of Draco Malfoy from HP romantic fanfiction, Christian from Nip/Tuck, the Ninth Doctor, Fox Mulder... there's a great many of them on tv.
