I'm one of those terrible people who liked the books well enough but liked the movies a lot more. Personally I'd prefer to read "they were walking through Mirkwood toward the castle" than all the other stuff because the style of the books intensely irritated me (yes, I'm a huge philistine). I do see your point about someone else's canon, though.

I'd still love to read a Buffy parody of LOTR, especially with Buffy as Legolas.
