tv update: Avatar 2x16, random Naruto fic rec

Finally watched "Appa's Lost Days" last night. If I didn't already love this little show to its bloody bits, I would love it after this. An entire episode devoted to a non-speaking, flying, white buffalo and how he escapes the terrible fate of ------spoiler-----, -------spoiler-------, ---spoiler---, and ------spoiler------. I just love this show.

This also strikes me as a great episode to transcribe and attempt to novelize in fanfiction form. I was trying to pick an episode to attempt this, but I find the mix of slapstick kiddie humor with the dramatic storyline distracting; it works visually but would be hard to capture in writing. Especially since a lot of the humor of Avatar relies on the visual "cute" factor, particularly with Aang. This episode, however, has almost no humor (it was quite dark by A:TLAB standards), and is perfect for long descriptions. Now that I've started Ivanhoe (and no I still have not finished The Amber Spyglass, but I will), I'm getting an overhwleming desire to break away from my standard dialogue-heavy style of fanfic and write in long, descriptivy* paragraphs. It'd be a pleasant style change.

We'll see what happens, though I doubt I'll get much writing done this week considering I have to go to jury duty all day tomorrow. Should get lots of time to read, at least. And after jury duty I have other stuff occupying me all week.

READ THIS NARUTO FIC. It's dark, sexy, actiony, tense, and of all things Kakashi/Sakura pairing. Yeah, I know. But trust me on this one. And skip the summary, because it really doesn't do the fic justice.

This is going to sound strange, but do you live in Florida?

Thing is, I have an English teacher who is being called to jury duty tomorrow and it'd be strange if you were both attending the same trial, wouldn't it?

Anyway... my sister and I couldn't catch more than about fifteen minutes of the new AtLA episode and I didn't feel motivated enough to seek the whole thing out, but it was pleasant and original in its own right. Not a lot of shows would give one of the pet animals, of all things, its own episode, and it shows that the creators sincerely care for their entire cast, which would be vital for characterization. I did, however, have a problem with Appa actually being able to travel to nearly every place they visited in season two, merely because it doesn't seem so... plausible. Is he really that fast? Or maybe he traveled over a period of n days, and somehow managed not to drop dead? And his sense of direction is mighty impressive... too impressive. >_>

But on the plus side, it had that interesting old man. Now that I think about it, AtLA is full of interesting old men, isn't it? Eccentric, benevolent, chauvinistic, and now we have a guru. We're definitely going to see him again, and I look forward to it.

*shiny eyes* Now all we need is a traitor character... hopefully it won't terrify the children.

If you don't mind mediocre quality, you can catch most of the AtLA episodes on Youtube.com. I'm not sure if they have most of season one, but I know they have all of season two that's aired so far, so you can always find them there. ^_^

Just randomly dropping by to agree with your fic rec 100%. Silvershine is so great with Kakashi and Sakura. Seven Days is also most excellent (and aha! Ivanhoe!)

You should probably catch the whole episode if you can-- even though most of it is character-building for the Appa/Aang relationship, it does advance the plot in two major points, one of which involves Azula and another significant supporting character.

Appa travelled the distance in four weeks; the specific time was given at the beginning of the episode. Since he didn't have to stop as often for the humans to set up camp and interact with the locals, it's actually plausible that he could go through the desert, criss-cross over the areas passed by other characters, visit the Eastern Air Temple, and eventually get to Ba Sing Se. Since the kids only went from the desert to Ba Sing Se and then stayed there, it wasn't actually that far a distance.

His sense of direction was actually wonky-- he wandered a lot and collapsed a few times. He only gets to Ba Sing Se at the end because of a specific intervening event that leads him to the city. It makes sense if you watch the whole episode.

A traitor would be interesting. We already have a pre-prepared traitor character in Jet, but it might be fun to have one who takes us totally by surprise.

I loved Seven Days! It was funny, which is a nice change from most of the other kakashi/Sakura fic I've been reading. Honestly, more fics with that pairing should be funny, because they're both fairly comedic characters (in the series they get played for laughs more than for angst, even Kakashi.)
