HBO is turning George R.R. Martin’s series of “A Song of Ice and Fire” fantasy novels into a TV series. The plan is to adapt one novel each season, starting with 1996’s “A Game of Thrones.”

Flist, what do you think of this? I've never read the books, and was told they were overly drawn-out and ultimately frustrating, but I've read several people on LJ talking about them.

Thoughts? Rants? Cheers?

If it is good fantasy, then I'll be happy. But the last time HBO did good fantasy, you know what happened? THEY CANCELED IT AFTER TWO SEASONS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE COSMIC DUSTBOWL STATE BATTLE BETWEEN GOOD AND EVIL WHEN WE JUST DISCOVERED THAT THE REBORN CHRIST'S TRUE HET LOVE IS IN FACT PROBABLY THE ANTICHRIST!

CARNIVALE, BITCH.

I MAY FORGIVE BUT I DON'T FORGET, HBO. Got my eye on you.

Honestly, I don't care. The first book in the series was so pretentious, overly long, and flawed that I didn't bother with the rest. If they want to make a miniseries? Fine on them.

I don't have HBO. ♥

I'm fairly certain the end product would be good regardless of the books, since HBO does pretty much everything well. It's getting them to be consistant and committed that's the problem.

Maybe by going to tv format they'll lose the parts that were overly long.

Don't know about that. All I'm waiting for is their Preacher mini. If that pans out, Watchmen will (hopefully) be right on its heels.

This may not ever play out, and I may have missed the point of your post, but I heard somewhere that HBO may make a movie to wrap up the story for Carnivale. Yes, I'll believe it when I see it, but it gives small hope.

Of course, I may have heard this from you too.

I actually loove these books. They simultaneously embrace the fantasy genre while like destroying all the stereotypes. The characters are awesome and there's a ton of suspense and gore and tragedy. My only complaint would be that they lack poetry... but seriously, these books will translate PERFECTLY to a TV series. Action and intrigue and sex = good HBO tv.
