Awesome post. Very much agreed on the Zutara count--unless someone seriously wanted/expected Zuko and Katara mackin' at the end, that finale was a shipper's dream. Shipping is not always about what happens--sometimes, it's just about the possibilities, and the tense, loaded moments when things could have happened but didn't. (I described Zutara to someone as, "Canon as a romantic relationship that didn't happen.") And I agree that it's also gorgeous viewed purely as a platonic thing; they very much did that dynamic justice, and I loved every second of it.
Wow, I hadn't thought about it so much, but--Toph dying would have been perfect. AND I AM SO GLAD SHE DIDN'T. I am willing to lose perfection for the sake of keeping Toph, who is one of my personal heroes.
I am sort of amused and the popular music reference choice in these posts is The Stars' "Up In Our Bedroom After the War." It's just so thematically fitting! The Stars seem to be very popular with Avatar fans. :D
