I think you can get a NaNo counter from the "fun stuff" tab at the NaNo site. And ...hi! And good luck. ;)

I selected "participant wordcount widget" but when I pasted to LJ, it doesn't show up.

I think a few people have had that problem - try using:

(IMG title="" src="http://www.nanowrimo.org/NanowrimoUtils/LiveParticipant/461556.png") instead, replacing outer brackets with html tags.
