It's been the whole season. He hasn't been so up&down in his writing, and he's been more likeable. I don't like it when they use Ted to send a message about maturity (even though I get it, as he is "discovering" himself as the main character in his life), and thankfully the only times he did that this season, it was often played for laughs, such as with Ted and Barney's age list. And I like Ted post-break up almost more than any other time, because at least he's humbled toward everyone.
The finale stuff with Ted being a professor? I THINK IT'S PERFECT. It fits him just right, and I like how they've led up to it, with his love of discussing architecture for hours, and his finicky grammar corrections.
