Nov. 1st, 2002 03:51 pmCribbed from ipomoea's friday five...
1. Were you raised in a particular religious faith?
Not really... sort of raised knowing that my dad is Protestant Christian (but ony mildly), and knowing my mom would've been Luthren except that she's mostly an atheist. That was about half of it-- could say I was raised with Christian moral basis--mostly "be nice to others, don't steal, etc..."(not to say that's exclusive to Christianity or anything, though). The other half was from my grandmother on my mom's side, who's a mix between atheism and Scientology.
2. Do you still practice that faith? Why or why not?
Hah. No. My mom's influence meant that I wasn't told I had to be anything, I was just told what my parents were. I decided not to bother with religion at all; weirdly my brother started going to church when he got to his middle teen years. I do celebrate Christmas though, but that's a cultural event, not a religious one, in my regard.
3. What do you think happens after death?
Either nothing, and you simply stop... or you are reincarnated. But you might not be reincarnated to a time *after* your death, because reincarnation doesn't follow a linear timeline. One's next life might be as a merchant in Egypt in what to us is 800 years ago, for example.
4. What is your favorite religious ritual (participating in or just observing)?
I like listening to choirs sing. It's not because I get anything religious out of it, but I think it's pretty.
5. Do you believe people are basically good?
I hope so, and I tend to live my life operating under that assumption. If we're not all inherently good, then at least we're all inherently nuetral. I think for the most part though that people are inherently selfish-- but part of being a sentient, self-aware creature is that we can rise above our inherent selfishness (ie survival need), because we can see how unselfishness in the short run helps us in the long run. Also, love makes us better people than we are by ourselves.
