timepiececlock: (well fuck me)
Was v. v. bored last night with LJ on the down & outs, and no one around to play cards with, and nothing interesting on tv.

In a moment of whimsy, I jumped in my little car went driving out in far too heavy rain to the nearest Barnes & Noble, and bought Neverwhere by Neil Gaimon. At nearly 10:30 or so, not long before closing. When I'm alreayd in the middle of about 6 other books, and textbooks on top of that.

I got home, read 107 pages (as opposed to my usual attention span of 20-40). I did the dishes, and read 30 more, and went to bed.

I read another 11 pages standing in the cashier line at my college office, waiting to buy a parking sticker.

I love this book.

Now: onward. Things to do. People to damage.

Got this survey from [livejournal.com profile] valereix

Where were you...

1. When John F. Kennedy was shot (11/22/1963)
Not born yet. Long time from being born.

2. When Mt. St. Helens blew (5/18/1980)
Not born yet, but quite a bit closer this time.

3. When the Challenger exploded (January 28, 1986)
Probably picking at my lunch or crying. I was two.

4. When the 7.1 earthquake hit San Francisco (10/7/1989)
Hanging by my 5 year old fingers from the day care monkey bars. When my legs started to swing without my help, I knew somethng wasn't right.

5. When the Berlin Wall fell (11/7/1989)
um... was 5, and didn't see it to be of great import to my personal interest at the time. Or I possibly didn't even notice it was happening.

6. When the Gulf War began (1/16/1991)
I don't remember, as I was the shocking age of 7. I remember hearign about it end, though. That was in my living room.

7. When OJ Simpson was chased in his White Bronco(6/17/1994)
I remember this! I was sitting in the white car outside of P. W. SuperMarket listenign to the radio while my mom had run to buy cinnamon raisen bagels. I was 10; go me.

8. When the building in Oklahoma City was bombed (4/19/1995)
Sitting at home watching TV after school.

9. When Princess Di was killed (8/31/1997)
Watching late night news, doing massively nothing, age 13.

10. When Bush was first announced President (11/7/2000)
Ranting at the tv, news channel.

11. When the 6.8 earthquake hit Nisqually, WA (2/28/2001)
uh.... no memory. But then I'm inattentive like that.

12. When terrorists knocked over the World Trade Center (9/11/2001)
I live in California, so it was still early in the morning for us. My mom threw open my bedroom door in her pajamas, slammed on my light to wake me up, and yelled "Someone's bombed the pentagon!"
A little while later I'd gone to school earlier for tutorial, and I had to explain to a friend and a few others what was going on, as they'd gotten to school earlier without having watched the news. It was freaky to be have to explain it to someone else, to be the only in a group who knew. When I finally got to my Ttrig class to study, I spent the whole time listening to the news radio the teacher had on, rather that adding & subtracting sines.

Two new icons by moi:

one with my second favorite picture of Spike EVER

and

one with a Showtime screencap (thank you [livejournal.com profile] wisteria_) with the last line from this poem, one of my favorites:

e. e. cummings - if everything happens that can't be done

if everything happens that can't be done
(and anything's righter
than books
could plan)
the stupidest teacher will almost guess
(with a run
skip
around we go yes)
there's nothing as something as one

one hasn't a why or because or although
(and buds know better
than books
don't grow)
one's anything old being everything new
(with a what
which
around we go who)
one's everyanything so

so world is a leaf is a tree is a bough
(and birds sing sweeter
than books
tell how)
so here is away and so your is a my
(with a down
up
around again fly)
forever was never till now

now i love you and you love me
(and books are shutter
than books
can be)
and deep in the high that does nothing but fall
(with a shout
each
around we go all)
there's somebody calling who's we

we're everything brighter than even the sun
(we're everything greater
than books
might mean)
we're everyanything more than believe
(with a spin
leap
alive we're alive)
we're wonderful one times one
