timepiececlock: (stand by me Spuffy)
Dear Joss/Angel/Buffy/Firely fan-people on my Flist and those who have friended me,

I am sitting at the speedy but uncomfortable computers at my campus' open media labs, and I happened to stop by my UserInfo page, saw my lists, and thought of you.

I know that I don't talk about Buffy or Spike or Joss stuff on my journal as much as I used to. But I still think about it often, I still read fanfic like a mad bitca, and I still love reading posts about it by you folks.

I failed in my mission to watch the Angel season finale this weekend. My step-aunt and brother arrived from Southern California and we were full up dealing with them. It hasn't even crossed my mind until two typed sentences ago. I will be watching it soon, however. And I'll post thoughts.

Just like I'll be watching the Firefly movie next year, and the Farscape miniseries this fall.

Buffyverse was the thing that caused me to first interact with most of you, be it from reading fanfic, talking on Crumbling Walls or WeBob, or just from picking up people on LJ as time passed.

You're all awesome, and even though I some times don't look at my Flist some days, or I go crazy with 100+ people's journals to keep track of and sometimes I get confused about which conversation I had with who, y'all are beautiful and unique snowflakes, no matter WHAT Tyler Durden says.

Even if I don't talk about Buffyverse as much as I did before, it's still my ultimate fandom. It's the first fandom in which I head-dived straight into everything I could from fic to art to just conversation and analysis. On top of that, Buffy/Spike is still my OneTruePairing. I still think their story is so fucking cool and I wonder how long it will be before I get as attached to another pairing as I was and still am attached to B/S.

So, in conclusion, I love the kind of people I've met on LJ through Buffyfandom, and the range of minds and opinions and ages and experiences and languages and fandoms that I've met here. I love that you're all so witty and funny sometimes you make me green with envy.

Everyone makes a defriending post once in their term on LJ, right? Well, I've resisted two whole years, but here is mine:

I'm not going to be defriending anyone on the basis that we don't share fandoms anymore. You guys are too cool and I refuse to give you up. Even if you defriend me for the above stated reason, I'll still stalk your open posts.

Unless you decide to become a religious fundamentalist so-far-right-you-go-in-circles PresBush fanboy/fangirl who listens to bad rap music, wants to be Britney Spears, and hates old people or kicks housepets. Then you're out of here. Also, I'd want to know how you hid that evil side of you this long in the first place.

But everyone else, much love.

See you next time I update (5 minutes to 2 days),

Rashaka

P.S. Also, to the two great LJ people who sent me Christmas cards this year, I'm sorry I never sent one back to you. Rest assured, there is guilt.

That would explain so much. ;)

I'm looking right now in the background of another window at a promo picture for the new romance movie The Notebook, and all I can think is: When did Paul Gosling go from being a skinny teenage-looking actor to become this muscled, bearded leading man who looks great in a wet t-shirt?

Weirdness.

Anyone else notice how Shigure is the slut of FB fic? He gets paired with freaking everyone.

----

I watched Kill Bill 1 with my family on Saturday night. My brother and I had seen it before, my dad, mom, and aunt hadn't. I was surprised, but my mom sat through the whole thing and even made a few jokes afterward instead of walking out and giving me a look that says "why do I ever let you convince me to watch this awful stuff?"

I guess there's something about campy movies that can take in people who loath the entire genre these movies spoof.

I still love O-ren Ishii's council speech. And I've still got to convince someone to go to the theater to see volume 2 with me.

I did watch the "making of--" thing on the DVD. The interviews with Tarantino cracked me up. He uses the word "like" the way a California teenager does-- spoken rapidly, interjected between every 5 words, and with great nuances of emphasis and meaning that only one's fellow like-saying peers can truly appreciate.

I don't even know where he grew up or anything about his origin, but it cracks me up to hear "adults" talking the way I did 3 years ago and still do when I'm relaxed.

If I were to meet a person who has only just started anime and wanted to know what the best was, this is what I'd tell them to watch, and the order I'd tell them to watch it in.

Ultimate Anime Rec List:
or
How to go about educating someone into otakudom, through anime showings

1. Cowboy Bebop - I think this is one of the most accessible shows to watch from the perspective of an anime newbie or hopeful anime inductee. It's themes are more familiar and accessible to Western audiences, and it's character designs are stylish, and it's considerably less weird-scary than some other shows. And the music holds your attention until you've seen enough that you're convinced you want to stay.

2. Trigun - Because this is my favorite, and also because of the reasons above. It's a good show by which to introduce someone to the wackyness of anime and the drama, and to slowly get them used to the inherent sillyness too. Also introduces the philosophical element common in so many anime series.

3. Fruits Basket - Unlike the the other two, this would expose the viewer to the less action, more personal type of series out there. FB displays a stellar range of comedy and drama, and represents many of the most enjoyable elements of anime as a flexible art medium. Also, it proves that anime can do sitcoms, and do them damn well, so well you never want them to end. It teaches the lesson of anime humor and irony.

4. Naruto - Time to introduce the newbie to fighting anime! By now they should be used to action and comedy, drama and sillyness. Time to show them the best fighting anime out there. And teach them that anime is crack and that crack is called Naruto.

5. Neon Genesis Evangelion - now that you've got them exposed to all of the above, it's time to introduce them to the "weird & disturbing shit" category. Eva, what a way to start down that road. It also rounds out their education nicely with a very-frequently discussed title that is always good for strongly opinionated conversation-starters.

6. The Vision of Escaflowne - And here is where they get the culmination of everything they've seen before - perfect music, perfect character development, perfect plot, perfect writing, perfect romance, perfect drama, damn near perfect everything.

And now that your basic education is complete, time for the fun excursions. Like electives in high school.

7. Full Metal Alchemist - Angst. comedy. angst. action. angst. magic/alchemy. angst. brain-exploding plot that makes you wibble. And very very smartly interwoven.

8. Ranma 1/2 - Because Rumiko Takahashi is a household name for anime fans. And there's a reason for that, absurd as that reason may be.

9. FLCL - Best experienced when one is well and deeply into anime fandom already and are more emotionally prepared to deal with it's beautific and metaphoric psychotic randomness.

10. X, the movie - Because they need to know how bad the bad can be. It's a horrible experience they'll hate you for, but it's a harsh lesson that must be taught: some anime really sucks.
