timepiececlock: (Zuko likes pikes)
Just finished up four more episodes; I'm watching them as fast as megaupload will allow me to download them (curse your 243 minute wait time!) My enjoyment grows with each episode, which is a good thing. I'd say I'm a fan at this point. While its not the near-instant love I felt for Doctor Who's beginning, I love a fun show and Robin Hood is a fun show.

I think it must be very hard for the writers, though. Here they are with a completely open formula (anything they think of, they could write into an episode without a whole lot of problem), yet the cast is stuck in a bizarre kind of stasis. The series will end when King Richard returns from the war... and yet until the King returns, nothing of substance will change. Guy, the Sheriff, Prince John... all of these villains must survive until the end of the show. From week to week, little will change or move forward. Still, it's fun and I like the cast quite a bit.

I particularly like Jack/Saphia, and the gradual introduction of arabic/muslim tidbits into Robin's history. I like that they've written him to come away from the war with a great respect for the Saracens, and indeed implied that meeting their culture and learning their language is part of what has turned him from a warring soldier to a person who wants peace above bloodshed. But I also like that they show him suffering a sort of hidden PTSD, that he's still very deeply troubled by the violence he witnessed and participated in with the Crusades.

I'm excited that I still have several episodes to go in this season and season 2 before I have to wait for air time. Bless the internet!

And why am I now obsessed with the song "Take Your Momma Out" by the Scissor Sisters? I don't even LIKE the Scissor Sisters, really.

I think it's because I came back from AmeriCorps with one of my teammate's mixed CDs being left in my car, and that's the first song on the mix. Now it just reminds me of my teammates and of New Orleans and of AmeriCorps NCCC's insane party culture underneath all the do-gooding. Combine the idealistic children of hippies, the threat of random drug testing, no supervisors over 25, and living just outside New Orleans... and you get this nifty catchphrase: "AmeriCorps turns potheads into alcoholics." It also shows people the awesomeness of volunteer and nonprofit work, of course, and creates young leaders, blah blah blah, and all that shiny stuff. I had a great year.
