Back in the golden state, and Persepolis
Feb. 10th, 2008 03:02 pm1. Two weeks in Utah in the middle of winter was enough to convince me that a life on the coastal half of California is and will continue to be a wise decision. It's not snowing! It's not so cold I want to die! I love rain and sunshine.
2. Everything good you've read about Persepolis is absolutely and unconditionally true. This movie rocked my weekend and is currently rocking my month. There is nothing that is not wonderful in it: romance, political turmoil, precocious children, free-thinking young people, and humor-- gobs of humor! I laughed a lot. I also came very close to crying.
I will write a proper review sometime. I just have to say: if this doesn't win Best Foreign Film *and* Best Animated Feature, I'll throw my shoe at the TV. This is the best animated film I've seen since Spirited Away, and I would tentatively say it's better except that the two films are so profoundly different it would do both an injustice to compare them.
Sidenote: I encourage you to see this film in theaters. I saw it in theaters this weekend, and saw that first, and I believe that the translation of the theatrical version is better than that of the one available through downloading. Certain statements are better framed, with more powerful or more grammatical language. The lines that differ say essentially the same message, but the script in the theatrical version is so good that even seeing little bits of it made less seems an injustice toward the power of the work as a whole. SO GO SEE IT TONIGHT!
...I need icons.
